And Ryan Styles is the equivalent of Elminster?

The best guy on it was Tony Slattery back in the early days. Back before the show became big. He's not funny anymore, but back then he was hilarious. And his attempts at the songs were so very bad that they were much, much better than those of Josie Lawrence with her ability to make up an entire song with rhythm and rhyme on the spot.

Tony was cool. I myself preferred the line-up of Ryan (Stiles), Colin (Mochrie), Greg (Proops), and Josie (??). Eddie Izzard was cool on there sometimes too.

But Clive Anderson definitely as the host.

Colin Mockery and Ryan Styles. Put them together on Who's Line and I would sit and laugh for hours, if necessary. Espcially when they were doing animals.

I saw an episode where they were doing a Sheep Soap Opera. But the Dinosaurs were the best.

Let's see -

Ryan Stiles = the righteous roleplayer
Colin Machry = the munchkin
Wayne Brady = the rules lawyer
Drew Carey = the killer DM?

Actually, one of my favorite guest appearances was from Robin Williams on the Amercian version. He proved after all this time that he's still got it.

And, Scott, are you sure about the scripting? I knew you still needed writers to come up with situations, but I saw an interview with Carey the first season where he specifically said they WEREN'T scripted - and in fact, they spend several HOURS doing a 30-minute show because they have to cut out so much improv that simply bombs!

NO.
I have never seen him roll dice, and if there's no randomness then he's not being a referee in th D&D sense of being a DM.

Would anyone who enjoys playing or especially running Amber Diceless like to field this one please?

D&D style, not Amber. RPG, yes, but most times I've seen it/run it, it didn't end up being like atypical D&D. And I might be opening a can of worms here, but unless you had a reasonable GM, those games could go off on a tangent... which, of course, brings us back to the idea of whether Drew Carey is the DM of the show. The show is ultimately about, tangents, as long as they are funny ad lib tangents.

And that's why it is NOT like D&D, there is no story, plot, with limited character development. Funny, yes. D&D, no, unless you continually have 5 minute adventures.

Not even really that is it? It is scripted and they use writers (comedian Bruce Baum is one of them), not like the original version.
You're confusing WLIIA with Hollywood Squares. On the latter show the comedy used to be ad libbed (and god Paul Lynde was amazingly hilarious), but now it's pre-written by a group of writers, including Bruce Baum.
