Is it always like this?

There are a "few". I wish there were more. I came looking for a way to try out 4e while my RL group kind of finished up our 3.5 campaigns. Even though my general opinion is: they dumbed down the game and over simplified it. I am of the opinion that Paizo has made the right changes with their system that 3.5 needed and will push to play that in my RL games.

So start one. :D The easiest way to get a game going if you don't see one to join is to DM it yourself.

I don't necessarily disagree.

I've had similar motivation (though I don't want to give any unbased judgement of 4e). It is more or less the reason why I've been haunting these boards for some months now. To get a feel for 4e. How does the new movement work? How do the roles affect the game? How does the surge thing work out? Are skill challenges fun? Is the skill system workable? What's with the new classes? Do races affect the game more? How do those powers work? Have opportunity attacks changed? Are monsters different? Is multi-classing workable? Do rituals work? Do magic items affect the game differently this time around?

I didn't (and still don't) know, and the *cough* easiest *cough* solution to figure these things out before starting my own games seemed to come here and play a game or two.

Oh boy was I wrong.....

Again, that was my intention.

1. play 4e.
2. decide if I like it
3. start a game (either 4e or old D&D).

I have, however, been failing spectacularly at the first step of this mightily ambitious project of months now.

I find attrition rates are high amongst PbP all-together, both from the player & DM side. I've been in one game that died because of players & one from DM burnout. However, I think there are more than 3 going on. I'm running 2 myself ;)

Not all of the games have a daily posting requirement (i.e. Strahd's Yar Gock Campaign - 3/week).

Yeah, real life is unkind to PbPs.

I tried to make up for it in my Invasion campaign by only requiring 1-2/week posting, but even then, stuff happens.

But that's normal. Let's face it, this is a hobby, not a paycheck or a spouse. It's always going to be far from the top of the list for everyone.

As much as I agree with your statement, I am a new player here and would not project myself so greatly as to be able to run a game properly in a system (by this I mean the PbP system not D&D) I am unfamiliar with. When I was a Storyteller for White Wolf's Digichats (well more the digichats that followed in their wake) I familiarized myself with the delivery system of the game before I would ever presume to have the knowledge or time to run a proper story arc. My statement was not a vituperation of the GM's here at all. Only a statement that I am interested to find a 4e game and there are more eager gamers than games at this moment. Furthermore, I would love to delve into my imagination and throw a campaign around. However, I have very little time and I would feel like I was doing my players a disservice by not giving them the proper attention. I can however find time to play and control the actions of one dynamic character.
