Is it worth buying stuff especially for 3.5 anymore?

Currently, I make an effort to buy stuff compatible with 3.5. I don't only buy such stuff, but it's a large factor in purchases.

But I wonder, with rumors increasing of 4.0 edition coming sooner rather than later (2006 seems to be a popular guess), I'm really wondering whether it's worth using this as a guiding principle. At this point, anything I buy will officially be out of date in two years. OK, you can keep playing an edition beyond that, but I'm a sort that probably will convert (like it or not ;)).

I have no idea how useful all my 3e stuff will be when 4.0 finally comes out. I don't mind using older stuff and converting--I'm currently running a converted Expert D&D module. But certain types of supplements, classbooks come to mind, can be very tied the edition they're published in.

So, anyone have thoughts on this issue?

If you want it, buy it. Chances are good that, even if 4th edition (oh god, I can't believe I just typed that) *does* come out in 2 years, your purchases will still find use as source, if not outright rules, material.

People should live in the moment and not worry about what *might* come in 2, 4, or 6 years.

If you are concerned with the possibility of uncampatible rulkes, then buy the products that are rules lite. There are some great books filled with ideas out there and ideas work for any system.

What the frick? Are you serious? What rumors? Where? When? Can anyone else verify this?

Seriously, if "4.0" (how did we start referring to RPGs by computer terminology, anyway?) comes any sooner than TEN FRIGGIN' YEARS, I'm going to barf.

:(

I concur.

Though I could stand it coming out in 5 years but definitley NOT 2.

There is no 4th edition coming any time soon.

The main source of 4th edition rumors lays in people speculating whether or not the OGL or SRD will change or become closed whenever the next version of D&D comes out.

Well, Chris Pramas of Green Ronin guessed 2006 IIRC on the latest Mortality Radio. Not that that's based on any inside or authoritiative knowledge.

Go ahead and barf, vindicator.

I'm a bookwhore and I'll buy it. Uhm.

3.5 realised 80% of my houserules and invalidated or changed the other 20%. I only use three houserules that were "caused" by 3.5.

If 4.0 is THAT good... I still gonna use my 3.5 books with fluffy flavor fun. Buy all you can, saving money is only good for the wife.

It never was, IMO.

Ah, I see what you're talking about. Obviously, I have no problem continuing to buy 3.5 (or 3.0 for that matter), as I have no intention of converting to any further edition if it occurs in less than 10 years time - and talk of 4e at this time is just nonsense.

Needless to say, based on my busy lifestyle both at work and at home, I have no intention of learning a new set of rules nor reading a whole bunch of more regurgitation, much less spending a whole lot more money on books with rising prices and no value-added content.

3.x (3.39 for me) works just fine, and will continue to do so until I tire of the hobby and leave it (not for many, many, many years it looks like). Besides - as I mentioned above, talk of 4e at this point in time is ridiculous. You're not serious about this thread and even thinking about reducing 3e purchases because of speculation about 4e, are you? W3rd.
