D&D 4E Is liking 4E biased by how many books you own?

I own over 40 3.5 books, every issue of Dragon since 250, and the last three years of Dungeon. Based on everything I've read or heard about 4E, I will be switching to that next year.

Well, I've been playing D&D since 2nd Edition was at it's height. I bought a ton of books for that edition, as well as a bunch of 1st edition books simply for the nostalgia. I bought about 3/4 books throughout the run of 3rd edition. I counted it up, and I've got over 60 D&D books, as well as books from other 3rd party companies based on the d20 system. Not to mention, I've been a subscriber to Dungeon magazine and Dragon magazine for years, and all the minis I bought. All I can say for 4th edition: bring it on! I'm looking forward to it!

It started with 3.5E for me.

Last count right after 3.5E was announced was about $1800 in 3.0 books and related materials.

And that was when WotC left me in the dust.

When it comes to D&D rules I'm usually a minimalist. Core rules and not much else. Well, except for Dragon and Dungeon.

3.0 changed that. I started buying lots of stuff that I never would have even thought about before. (i.e. 3rd party d20 modules and campaign settings).

I DM'd for three different groups and many one shot adventures with different players. For me, it was a lot of prep work. A grind compared to what I was used to under previous rules. The "work" to "fun" ration had risen significantly.

The announcement of 3.5 and the resulting realization that I had spent well beyond my comfort zone (after adding everything up) killed it for me.

I still am fascinated by D&D and look forward to the new incarnations of the brand from the side lines. I harbor no ill will towards WoTC and their supporters.

It's not their fault I'm such a skin-flint. :)

No. I own a lot of 3x books and do not plan to buy into 4e upon its release, as I simply have too many 3x stories yet to tell. That said, I am excited about and looking forward to the day that I do buy into 4e. I like most of what I've read about it and enjoy trying new things. So, no, liking (or disliking) 4e has nothing to do with how many 3e books one owns.

Interesting definite of skinflint! ;)

Funny thing: I didn't really have the chance to buy much non-Wizards material for 3e (I'd have to order it in specially, and I didn't have the money). So, when 3.5e came out, even with most of Wizards' books, there were only a handful!

Different story with 3.5e, but I've definitely gotten a lot of use out of the books.

Cheers!

I'm a collector...so don't use me as a benchmark for gamers everywhere. Not counting ESDs (of which I have hundreds) I have most of the hardcopies as well. Some kids collected comic books or baseball cards; I collected D&D books. Now, I am a grown-up with regular access to Ebay. :)

For example, I have three different editions of the "Basic set" and two different editions of the "Expert set," but just one copy each of the Companion, Master, and Immortal sets. I have all of the modules from B1 to X13, all of the Gazetteers, and all of the Accessories, plus the Hollow World game setting and its modules, etc., etc.

And we haven't even gotten to the AD&D stuff, which fills two-thirds of my library.

The more 3e stuff I can sell off, the more likely I am to actually buy a 4e phb & MM and nothing else. On 3rd ed, I held out on buying anything non core for YEARS-- then, only 1 year ago began buying several D&D products... and now 4e is coming out. I'll have to get rid of some of my more useless D&D products to make buying 4e worth my while.

Not at all, I have three 8 feet tall by 3 feet wide bookshelves full of D&D goodies from all editions (from my white box to ToB) and I can't wait till 4th Ed.

I think my library would sort of invalidate your hypothesis. I might have a great deal of 3E/D20 books. Just looking at my read library versus my store library I count about 130. Where I think you are wrong is that I have just as many for 1st and 2nd edition and I obviously went to 3rd. Some of us are just fans. I'll admit, I'm apprehensive in the extreme about 4E, but I'm sure I'll buy it and play it. It's either that or quit the hobby all together. I know which way the wind blows.

Edit: I note others are mentioning Dungeon and Dragon, if I add those I need to increase my load by about 150. Again, just from my read library, my store library has 150+ Dragons all by its lonesome.

I don't have a lot of 3.5 books (the core, and maybe a few others - most are currently packed up since they were accumulating dust in the library). I still have a bunch of 3.0 books that I reference. I have a ton of modules, but I use them for the other systems that I play.

I'm not exactly anti-4e - I'll probably buy the PHB to check out the rules, and will likely play if someone else DMs, but I seriously, seriously doubt I'll run it.
