I have tried and tried and tried to find anything that backs this story up, and every time, it just leads back to the original post accusing him, which (IIRC) is not from anyone involved in the story. I'm not saying it isn't true, I'm saying that I am very dubious about it. I give it the same credence as the whole "I don't give Facebook permission to use my pictures" copypasta. There was a controversy a few years ago that lead to him being removed from public-facing positions. Last I heard he has a position in the Magic department these days.
As I understood the situation, it was a result of naïvete on Mearls' part. A relatively high-profile person with a peripheral consulting role on 5e was accused of various things, and Mearls forwarded those accusations to the person in question asking what was up with that, which then exposed the accuser to retaliation from the accused.
I think a lot of that went down on Google+ and as such isn't available anymore. This is one of the more concrete things I've seen about Mearls being dismissive of the accusations.I have tried and tried and tried to find anything that backs this story up, and every time, it just leads back to the original post accusing him, which (IIRC) is not from anyone involved in the story. You do not recall correctly. The original tweet was from Olivia Hill, one of the people named in the alleged emails (though under her deadname), and target of a harassment campaign by Zak S prior to Mearls’ involvement.I have tried and tried and tried to find anything that backs this story up, and every time, it just leads back to the original post accusing him, which (IIRC) is not from anyone involved in the story.
In the absence of hard evidence, we have only Hill’s word and Mearls’. And as far as I know, Mearls has never even denied Hill’s claims. I see no reason not to believe Hill.I'm not saying it isn't true, I'm saying that I am very dubious about it. To be fair, I don't think he was allowed by WotC to comment any further under any circumstance. In the absence of hard evidence, we have only Hill’s word and Mearls’. And as far as I know, Mearls has never even denied Hill’s claims. I see no reason not to believe Hill.
