Is Polyhedron Lame or what??

Not an RPGA member, so it would not have been useful to me, as a members-only magazine/newletter.

But since they have changed the premise (or format) of the magazine to cover d20 System, it has now become a great resource, not as a D&D gamer but a d20 gamer as well.

I am wary of merging Dungeon and Polyhedron together though, especially when they're using the flip-book format. If anything, the Dungeon magazine should have merged with Dragon, allowing Polyhedron to provide non-D&D adventures for current or recent d20 mini-games (would love to have someone outside of WotC to submit a PULP HEROES adventure).

There are a lot of good things about the new Polyhedron. It does let the readers know about other d20 products.

There were some good articles in the old Polyhedron. (I wrote one on politics in RPGs some time ago.) But part of the problem of just relying on a membership base for articles is that it can be a little spotty in terms of quality and usefulness to different campaigns.

Overall, I like the new look.

I'm not a RPGA member either, but I did like the idea of Shadowchasers in the last issue if not the actual content. I thought the Class ideas were pretty lame, I mean come one, "The Smart Hero", "The Strong Hero"? Please tell me that D20 Modern will be much more then that, it has such potential! It reminds me of Bureau 13: Stalking the Night Fantastic (which by the way had the same lame problem).

As for the Poly issue in the Dungeon mags, I have no problem with it, but it all seems to need more fleshing out...

PS: Anyone else think Kalambranex's Mechanations was just awesome!?

Well, people often mention how the traditional D&D characters are archetypes from fantasy literature--the fighter, the wizard, the thief, the priest, the barbarian, the ranger. I like to look at all the Hero classes from Shadowchasers the same way. If you look at a lot of TV shows and adventure literature, many of the characters can be described the same way. I think that they are very flexible descriptors.

Also glad to see they got comic artist Jim Mahfood to do the art for Poly's cover and several internal illustrations in the latest issue.

Jim was a joy to work with. I only wish that the subject matter of the games I'm showcasing matched his style more often.

I've been very annoyed that while it's become a 'd20 magazine' it's so far had no original Open Gaming Content.

While that doesn't legally violate the whole d20 thing since it's WotC; it sure violates the spirit of it all.

Actually, we've decided that it's best that the SRD be the only official venue for WotC releases of OGC. Though Poly seems like an ideal place for it, the SRD is always available (unlike a periodical), and always easy to reference for other companies. Having multiple outlets for OGC from the same company (and the one everyone looks to because we own the game) didn't seem like such a good idea.

There's every chance in the world that material that first sees the light of day in Poly will make it into the SRD.

Hope that makes sense.

D&D is really the only game I play - I'd like to have the time for other stuff, but it ain't happening.

Have you considered adding some of the feats from the various games to your D&D campaign? Granted, it's not a lot for 64 pages, but if you're already getting the magazine I suggest giving those sections a careful look. There's lots of D&D applicability there.

Also, be sure to check out the next issue. Even if you're not into Spelljammer, the game is as close to D&D as anything we've published so far, and there ought to be lots of little pieces you can steal for your game.

I did, because it was based on an adventure hook I wrote in the first Living Greyhawk Journal. First time that's ever happened with something I've written, so far as I know.
