Is stealing PC's toys taboo?

Basically, the idea was to show the player that his character was not invincible, and that he'd better be careful when walking around like a big man when he's really just a little fish.

So your DM used his god powers to teach the player a lesson. Its a step away from teleporting the tarrasque in on them when they are taking a dump.

Oh please. Sounds more like the character was mouthing off when he didn't have backup - even after the DM game him an out. Behave like that, and not getting whacked is like taking a dump on a tarrasque and expecting to walk away.

Pretty much ditto.

I haven't read the Exalted rules, but I'm willing to bet there is no rule saying DM's can't beat up PC's and take their stuff. I'll go out on even a bigger limb and bet there is no rule against a DM killing PC's and taking their stuff.

I've played both.

I don't think it's a big deal in Exalted, which has no method that I saw of balancing magic items anyway. It's a big deal in DnD though, where magic item balance is a big part of character balance.

Well I think, having actually played Exalted, that if the GM keeps the artifact he was out of line. This is of course with the caveat that it was an artifact the player spent some of his character creation points on. If it was an artifact given to him by the GM then I feel it was perectly fine. Why?

Because the artifacts you create in Exalted aren't like magic items in D&D. If you spend points to create an artifact you are sacrificing some of your characters capability in something else in order to have the artifact. It would be akin, IMHO, to a GM permanently stealing some of your character's charms, abilities, or skils since you could have bought those with the points instead. I just think this type of behavior on the GM's part will only foster an attitude amongst his players where they won't purchase things like familiars, arifacts, etc. for fear they will be taken when they could spend the points on something else that can't be stolen. IMHO, expenditures of character points should guarantee a certain level of immunity from being taken, at least in a permanent matter, since it's in essence a permanent reduction in the characters power level.

My Exalted GM told me that putting character points into something like an artifact or wealth gives it "plot protection against being lost".

Interwyrm, had this player done something like that?

One of my players reminds everyone about how unfairly he lost his Ring of Wizardry III. Pissy (but not in a super way).

Another of my players has never reminded anyone about how he lost his Efficient Quiver, +4 Shocking Burst Nunchuku, Spear of Butt-Kicking, and a bunch of other stuff ... basically he lost everything once, and never complained.

A third player had his treasured Rapier sundered (and he'd been working on upgrading this same weapon for 13 levels), got very unhappy about it, and now is moving on. He knows he can make another.

I have no real rule about what's fair. I try to make magic items "easy come, easy go", so no-one is permanently stuck with a bad decision or die roll -- least of all me, the DM! -- but all I have in my arsenal is periodic accountings where we add up the value of everyone's gear and make sure they're all roughly equal and all within the ballpark of the DMG's wealth-by-level guidelines. :\

Sorry, I did mean Exalted 2e. (I do realize this is a d20 primarily forum).

Just a little more background on the story here...

Yeah, Solar Exalted are supposed to kick butt and chew bubblegum, etc. when they are in Creation, or when they are old. This particular solar was in Yu Shan (heaven) and he has a reputation for being very unforgiving to gods.

This is why he was a little fish. Back in creation, yeah, he is the big man.

Secondly, in Exalted, artifacts are something that require attunement. That means that only the character that's attuned to it can use it, and he can track it down no matter what. The end result of this scenario will be him asking the other PCs to help him go on the witch hunt someone mentioned.

He did sink character background point into it. Taking it away permanently would not be cool.

Personally, I don't think he did anything wrong. It's just that one of the players (not even involved) got rather animatedly upset about this situation. I was curious as to other people's experiences
