IS the party ready to meet a mind flayer

TheNovaLord

First Post
2 paladins lvl 6 ( one with 6HD horse, the other a 4HD celestial horse) (1/2e and a human)
1 cleric5/wizard1 with pretensions to be a mystic theurge (human)
1 ranger 5 (TWF) (half orc)
1 scout 6 (archer) (high str and dex wood elf)

They are all 'knights'.

They will be attacked without any hint one is lurking

On the one hand despite their decent to good saves the mind blast look terrifying, on the other if the scout saves the MF poor AC and not good hp look a tempting target?

any thoughts

A single, solitary mind flyer is hamburger for a party with good to great saves. The Paladin and Cleric will most likely be unaffected, and they can use their Remove Paralysis magic to assist anyone who is Mind Blasted.

The joy-joy goodness of mind flayers is in their thralls, or slaves. A couple of 3-5 HD beasties or a group of [insert race here] Warriors should help turn the tide for the flayer.

its wot i thought, put the party arent great with missiles, and if the scout fails, as is likely they may be abit stuck. Does remove paralysis help the stunned?

even the C+P will saves will be in the +7 to +9 so no where near garaunteed.

i think if the cleric and scout both fail it may be curtains

Its important to the plot so i do need a 'squidgy' in there to face the party. it may not result in combat but it does register fairly high on the detect evil scale and though all 'good' their are quite the zealot lot at times

And if they don´t know that they´re going up against a Mind Flayer, what happens if the clerics hasn´t prepared any Remove Paralysis ( the paladin can´t cast this spell at 6 level)?

I´ve a very bad feeling about this encounter - the Mind Flayer could just Planeshift and Blast them until they fail their saves. And this is a lone Mind Flayer without any thralls.

The best course of action -imho - is to flee once they know what they´re up against and prepare for next assault.

Plane Shift is highly inaccurate. You cannot use it to move to a specific location (except with lots of luck).

Mindblast is a gamble, but normally, the party should be fine. The Mindflayer isn't great in physical combat and will fall or have to retreat (that's where Plane Shift is really handy) soon, once pressed. If the party is smart enough to surround him, so he cannot blast them all, easily, once he used his fearsome power, that might help.

dont they levitate at will? thats my concern at party being lacking in missiles. the cleric has summoning as one domain and the ranger has an eagle chum, so thats some aerial support

really does come to down to then scout whether he saves or not (he has the partys best weapon a +1 (+3STR) comp longbow of frost). 1 good arow hit may well scare of the MF (d8+2d6SK+4+d6F+1PBS)

seems like save or die and at such a low level. Maybe it will nuke them from surprise n then chat to the survivors.

ta for inputs

If the MF levitates, just have the archer stay at 65 ft. ;)

The biggest problem is, of course, that they would not know about the MFs powers and thus cannot decide on their tactics based on that. Once he uses some of them, they hopefully are still able to (should be, normally) and can react accordingly.

My bad on the Plane Shift-thingy. I wonder where I got that from?
My fear of Mind Flayers has somewhat been lessened :)
Let us know how it goes, though.

On the other hand, a fun option with Plane Shift is to send an enemy to another plane. Does that make you fear them a bit more?
