Super duper simple solutions:
If you dont have rope trick, then buy a scroll or two. A couple hundred gp and you're set (copy it into your spellbook, cast the one and sleep for one night, then rememorize one each day as long as the lich keeps trying to get you)
Or, you can always get a scroll of nightmare or two. If you know who is casting this on you (which you do, as you have identified him as the evil lich), then just use his own "uber" tactics against him and cast nightmare on him. Better, if you're a 9th level caster (which you should be if you're fighting something with tons of 9th level minions), get the spell into your book and just cast it all the time. If the spell is so "uber," then utilize it for yourself.
Also, I'd be inclined to say that nightmare doesn't need line of effect, because if it did it would be completely and utterly useless. As the spell is written I've always looked at it more as a flavor spell than something ultra-powerful, and with line of effect it would be a piece of junk.
