As a DM, do you feel like you have the perfect group for your style, preferences, etc? Maybe you would swap one or more out for someone else you know if not for the problems that might cause?

My first poll here iirc.

So, to the point...

I have a group now (4e) I have been running since 4e was released. Good people for sure. The campaign is coming to a close, and we all know that I will of course be running another campaign when this one is done.

Now, I run for 4 people. In this campaign, they were fine - but my next campaign will be much more RP focused and as such, it will not be one that 2 of the 4 players will... excel in... but they would still want to play.

Counting those 4 players, there are about 12 people in our circle that play - aka, that I could choose from for the next campaign. If I put together the "perfect" group for the next campaign (as in, people who really love the RP aspect) it would not include these two players.

Anyway, I'm still not sure how it will play out, but no matter how I describe the next game as heavily RP focused, neither will want to miss out on it so I will have to make a decision. This lead me to the question posed above - given the same circumstances (imagine your current game is coming to an end) would you want to switch players up, or would you be sticking with the same group... are they perfect for you or not?

Let me see, I have:

Mark -- He's dedicated to the game, and while not a theatrical roleplayer, he does think through how his character would react to things.

Louis -- Again, dedicated to the game. He definitely makes attempts to roleplay, including adopting a "voice" sometimes. He approaches the rules as a puzzle, and he min-maxes quite a bit, but he doesn't push it to the limit. His power-gaming is interesting, in that it's always about defense or teamwork, never about raw damage.

Mike -- Fairly dedicated to the game, but misses maybe one in six or seven sessions. Easiest-going person I've ever gamed with, and fun to hang around. Good roleplayer, in the narrow niche in which I've seen him.

Chris -- Dedicated to the game, but has lately been getting hijacked by Tanya. Power-gamer tendencies, but not bad. He drives the game when it comes to interacting with NPCs. A little bit of a tendency for the "mysterious loner."

Tanya -- Chris' girlfriend. Misses quite a few sessions, and sometimes drags Chris along. She likes to roll lots of attack and damage dice.

So not perfect, but a pretty good group.

My current group: pretty close to perfect. Other than I wish it was a little bigger, it's pretty damn good.

My last group: Oh God, what a mess. Not even close to perfect. More like Chaos Incarnate.

My first group: Now that was perfect. (I wonder how many people feel the first group they were a part of, or the first group they DM'd for, was perfect?) Maybe it's looking at it through the rose colored glasses of time and nostalgia, but I feel like that was the perfect gaming group. Even with the constant rotation of players due to deployments, it was the best.

Other: The perfect group is one where I'm not the DM. :D
For me, the perfect group is one where I don't have to be GM all the time.

Also, my group is not nearly into the "roleplaying" aspect as much as I am. Unfortunately, my skills in that area (which were never top drawer) have atrophied and I am not as comfortable as I was in bringing out the roleplaying elements as I once was.

The fact that I can only play on weeknights now, really cramps my ability to get in a good group. The local gaming scene is rich with gamers, thanks to two good FLGS. I just really can't tap into the scene since I am not available weekends.

I just wish we had more people (3 PCs at the moment; I think 4 is really ideal).

Then again, when we did have more, I wished we had less.

I would like to get one more player. Preferably someone who has not played much. I really enjoy having new people at the table and the fresh perspective they bring to the game. That said, my current group is a great bunch of folks who are fun to run games for.

I have one campaign with 2 sessions left to play, and I've just started a new campaign with four different players.

The old campaign is very close to perfect, bar one player (who is fine, but we have clashing issues most weeks). Another player left the campaign early on (and whilst he's still a friend, I'm glad he left this campaign).

The new group looks like it's going to be fine, but it's too early to tell.
