[it sounds OT but it isn't] US military training and procedures

Randomling, the military college program you want is ROTC. You can enter after having been in the service with no prior college experience with the goal of becoming an officer.

About being stationed in africa of asia...pick a place chances are america has some sort of op going on there...Currently we have soldiers stationed in more than 110 countries around the world and many of those even see some skirmishing.

The army has (had?) a program called "Green to Gold." You are serving as an enlisted, you essentially leave the army, go to college and get your degree and then come back as an officer.

For the Courts Martial procedure, do search for UCMJ. You'll find everything you need.

A bomb person could be a Explosive Ordnance Disposal Specialist (55D), which I know nothing about. You can also consider making the character a former Combat Engineer (12B). They have a well earned repution for being a very rough, tough group.

First of all, thanks everyone for your contributions. They're much appreciated.

The reason I wanted Nadine to be in the bomv disposal squad is that she has ranks in Demolitions (and a feat to provide a bonus too). It's her best skill and I wanted some in-game justification. Since it's only a class skill because of her Military profession, the bomb disposal squad seemed like a reasonable choice. :)

So I'm going to try and put everything together into a timeline, let me know if any/all of this makes sense.

June 1992: Nadine graduates high school and immediately enlists in the US Army.

1992 - 1996: Intially, basic training followed by EOD training. After doing her training, Nadine is initially stationed in Germany. She is stationed on several different bases across the world during her four-year tour of duty.

1996 - 2000: Nadine enrols in college (University of Wisconsin Milwaukee) where she majors in physics. After graduating, she is promoted to an officer rank.

2000 - 2002: Stationed in Turkey.

March 2002: While still stationed in Turkey, Nadine has a bizarre and traumatic supernatural experience (it's a horror game). Six weeks later, she threatens a superior officer and is given a Bad Conduct Discharge.

OK so where did I make mistakes? :) I can check the military ranks thread which is conveniently sitting nearby for her likely rank - though I'd be interested to know what the rate of promotion is in the Army.

Specific questions:

Would EOD training come right after basic, or not until you'd served for several years?
Would you ordinarily be promoted in the course of two years? How often?
Is the US Army base in Turkey in Ankura, or somewhere else? Is there a web site that lists cities (worldwide) that have US Army bases?

Thanks again guys!

There are U.S. Military programs where enlisted people will get a chance for college but it isn't that common. You have to be very sharp to get into such a program. It is much more common to go for one of the ROTC or NROTC programs where you go to college first and then have a six year commitment after that.

My best friend from High School flunked out the NROTC program, joined the USN's enlisted nuclear power program. Did such a great job there that the Navy gave him a second chance at college. He is now a career guy.

My character (before her discharge) was trained for the bomb disposal squad. My idea is that the army put her through college, but only after she'd been in service for 2 years - she joined up right after high school and wanted to do the college thing later.

Is that possible, or is it ridiculous? (I know that over here, it's pretty common for the military to put you through school in return for a guaranteed term of service, I think it's 2 or 3 years.)

Here's a dishonerable discharge story I heard second-hand. I can not vouch for its veracity, but its a creepy military story so it might fit.

A Marine on recon in asia was walking through a jungle. It was nighttime and he couldn't see very well. He walked into a spiderweb with the spider directly in his face. The spider couldn't jump off because the web was wrapped around the guy's head. So the guy had a squirming spider affixed directly onto his face. He panicked and pulled down on the trigger of his weapon firing off several rounds, one of them catching a fellow marine in the leg. Everyone ended up OK, but you're not supposed to screw up like that so the marine got a DD. I have no idea if other factors were involved.

I have a friend who's husband is Army and does Bomb Disposal work. He tends to get many short assignments lots of places. I think once he said it is such a high stress jobs depending on the assignment that the tend to rotate them around. He did 9 months in Korea clearing minefields, did 3 months in classes then 6 months in africa, then back for 6 months of teaching coasties how to recognize bombs.

Hope that helps.

He did say t hey take lots of refresher advance courses though> I guess ignorance makes for bad bomb techs.

If Nadine was commissioned as an officer in 2000, then she would have spent 2000-2002 as a 2nd Lieutenant. At her two-year point, she would have been promoted to 1st Lieutenant. Since she got out in March of 2002 (and assuming she graduated college in June of 2000), she would normally have still been a 2Lt.
