Its a new campaign and your DM offers you the following options

The group must either all be the same race or the same class.

What would you advocate for?

Assume the DM is capable of providing a game that would work for the groups choice.

Either could be fun, but I think all the same race would be easier on the DM. All the same class requires the DM to adjust the way in which he designs adventures on the whole, race just requires he adjust the flavor.

Human paladin

You have most of your bases covered. There's no law saying a paladin can't be an archer if one player wants a more shooty character. Everyone has some healing. You can play paladins in a lot of different ways, lawful good is not a straightjacket. And finally, if you accidentally give out too much treasure you have an excuse to take it away.

OR

Human monk

When you get to 7th level everyone will be doing Matrix jumps. Also the potential for jokes is endless ("Do you think those are dice you're rolling?" "Do you know what I don't like about gomes? It's the smell". "Do you hear that disintigrate spell? That is the sound of inevitability")

EDIT: I misread the question. I thought you had to pick the same race and class. Anyway, I'd have everyone pick the same class and go with my original reccomendations.

Either one would depend greatly on the campaign to be run - if he's asking that, he's got specific reasons. I know a guy who's getting ready to run a all-dwarf campaign based on the idea of retaking a Moria-like underground city post-Balrog. Another DM once proposed (but never undertook) an all-rogue game.

Either one could be loads of fun. Especially with multi-class options being on the table too.

I'm going to try to direct the group away from human, I'm hoping to put together something a little different. I might change the options I present to the group to be same class or all the same non-human race.

I'm also planning on starting the campaign in different places depending on what choices they make.

All rogues, city based, they'll probably all be part of the same guild.
All elves, some remote elven land...

All fighters, maybe I'll make the world very low magic or they'll be the city guard, or mercs
All clerics, could be interesting if they were different faiths..

I'm the DM in question, we rotate DM's and I'm thinking ahead to my turn. I think if they went with same class I'd make a tweak to the multiclassing.

You can only take your favored class for a multiclassing option (unless the group class is your favored class) and you can't take a bigger than 4 level dip in an alternate class and the main class must also be "in the lead" at all times (so you can't be a main 1/other 4 but you could be a main 5/other 4 and eventually a main 16/other 4)

Without knowing what we'd get, I'd vote same classes, as I wouldn't want to be saddled with being a human or half-elf.
