How does this contribute to not being Marvel's year? Because DC finally has some good news for a change?

Maybe it's bad news for Marvel because a talented director from their franchise has gone to work for their competitor? On a lesser scale but a similar concept as if Shigeru Miyamoto left Nintendo, said he wasn't going to make more Mario games, and went to work for Sony.
Gunn probably knows a bit of the MCU's current phase roadmap as well.

this is JAme's response to a fan asking if he now hates Kevin:

"Not only do I love Kevin, he was the 1st person I told after I did the deal with DC (@JohnCena was the 2nd). Contrary to popular belief, a dollar less for Marvel is not a dollar more for DC. DC & Marvel have the common goal of keeping the theater-going experience vibrant & alive!"

When Feige was recently asked about Gunn’s new job on the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever red carpet. He said, “Well, he has got a lot of work to do for Marvel between now and May, which he’s well aware of,” making a reference to Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special for Disney+ which will premiere on November 25 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 which is scheduled for a release date of May 5 next year. And quickly added, “But after that. I’ll be first in line to see anything he does.”

So I used to work in ediscovery which is a very niche and very "incestuous" business, in that because its a small niche business the people that know it tend to move around, and you run into the same folks over and over again.

Now from a business standpoint, you never want to see a rockstar go, but from a personnel standpoint these people all know each other, may be friends, etc. Ultimately you have to let talent grow and expand, and if you treat them well, they may come right back to you on the next go around.

Gunn is talented. I just hope he understands that DC & Marvel shouldn't have the same tone (also, not all DC properties should have the same tone as each other - Superman and Batman are very different animals). That said, I'd like DC to be generally more positive than Snyder's version - just not quite as slapstick as Marvel is getting.

It will be interesting to see what he does!
