I am a youngin. I barely remember him on TV, though I did see his farewell night and Bette's song. It is a blessing to know that people like him have walked among us though; true greatness. His life brought so much to the world, and hopefully he died knowing that.
I read an article today that spoke to his discrete relationship with the Letterman show. He apparently supplied a few discrete jokes to Letterman's monologue over the past year. I really found this touching, and in his retirement a truly noble man emerged. He left us telling of a desire to exit gracefully, and he did. A true artist.
