Argh.

For the past two weeks, something weird has been going on with our webserver. I keep getting quota error messages, and then mail bounces. After several fixes, everything LOOKS like it works great from my end, I don't get error messages anymore when I pick up my email.

But then it turns out that people SENDING me email still get them.

ARGH!

So, I'm doing housecleanng on the server and hopefully will have working email again int he next hour or so.

And make sure you don't have any viruses and other ilk on that server as well...

No problems there, Darth. It's a Unix mail server / web server. It was just filled up with... well... crud.

So I deleted 100 megs of crud, and I have space for email again.

Have you checked your background processes? There could be something running in the background that's spewing out a bunch of garbage and filling up space. On our old university servers, for instance, if we had a crash we'd get these core dump files that could easily be 20 or 30 megs each. If this is happening regularly, it could add up quickly after a while.

Another possibility, if all these problems are associated with email, is that something in the email program is creating a lot of clutter.

Or, if you're like me, it could just be a long time since you cleared off your hard drive.

No, the problem is with the log files taking up too much room on the web server.

Naw, that's nothing. I've had 200 megs of temporary internet files built up in the past, and once even had a whole extra gig of space hiding under screenshots in the folder of an uninstalled game.

Yes, I can believe that, Galethorn, but the problem here is that these files are on the web server. Not located in my house. Not even located in the same province as I, but on a virtual server in Edmonton, Alberta. No temporary internet files, no screenshots, no games to uninstall...

Just crud.
