[July] What are you reading?

New month, new thread.

I finished off the latest Pathfinder yesterday, and read about two-thirds of "Snuff" by Terry Pratchett. It seems to be one of his best in recent years.

Next up is "Clear and Present Danger", by Tom Clancy. Just because my brother gave me his copy, and I don't currently have other plans.

Finished A Storm of Swords and moved on to A Feast for Crows.

After Feast I'll be going back to Sandman Slim and his escapades because I don't own A Dance with Dragons yet.

I've also started Basho and his Interpreters as I get more and more exposure to and experience* with composing haiku.

Beyond that, I'll be reading through critical reviews of a few movies like District 9 and Surrogates (and a few others sitting in a pile that I can't see right now) so that I can pick which one I'll show this in this semester's composition classes.

* On top of posting one a day for the last five months to NaHaiWriMo, I've got a haiku coming out in the next issue of Frogpond.

Still on Bring up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel. Exquisite writing and puts a new spin to the often told tale of Anne Boleyn's brief stint as Queen.

I just read Akata Witch, by Nnedi Okorafor. It's a pretty standard kid-gets-inducted-into-magical-world story, but it's by a Nigerian-American woman, and it's based on African lore instead of European, so it has a very different feel to Harry Potter. Very well-written, very enjoyable.

I just finished the last book in Mark Walden's HIVE series and I've started on Nicolo Rising, volume one of the House of Nicolo series by Dorothy Dunnett. I read most of the series as a teenager, but I'm appreciating them much more now.

Done with Bring Up the Bodies, which I found easier to follow than Wolf Hall. Brutal.

Next up is the horror issue of Granta. Also DLed Brent Weeks' The Black Prism, which is on sale for US$3 at Amazon.
