This month, I've really been starting to lean already into some new (to me) death-metal bands. Here's a taste:
Mnemic (Passenger, The Audio Injected Soul, Mechanical Spin Phenomena) - three intriguing albums by this death metal/industrial metal band with groove/nu metal influences. I need to listen to these guys more, but if anyone here is a fan of Static-X, they might likely like these guys, save that they like even harsher music.
Death (Symbolic) - okay, not a new band to me, but this is an awesome record. My band is working on a cover of the rolling, groovy track 'Crystal Mountain', which I really like.
Opeth (Ghost Reveries) - an very experimental and folk-y (in places) album by these progressive death metal giants. I've only began to listen to Opeth in the past 3 months, but they are fast becoming a favourite of mine. I'm really digging the track 'The Baying of the Hounds', which just dives right in hard and then softly meanders through some amazing piano-driven sections.
Amon Amarth (The Crusher) - an older album by an awesome melodic death metal/viking metal, nothing has thus far stood out for me. I need to give this album another few listens though. 'As Long as the Raven Flies' is definitely a great song, with a huge "chugga-chugga-chugga" guitar part towards the end which just sounds awesome for a moshpit.
At The Gates (Slaughter of the Soul [Bonus Track Edition]) - this is a re-release by some of the forerunners of the Gothenburg melodic death metal movement, and boy is it a goody. I'm really digging track 1 'Blinded By Fear'.
and last but not least:
Nile (In Their Darkest Shrines) - Nile is an interesting band, I'll give them that. They have very polished lyrics and have the distinguished place of being a techincal death metal band - that is, a death metal band with an extremely tight and polished sound. I haven't yet been in the mood to really delve into this album, but a cursory listen made track 1 'The Blessed Deed' and track 9 'Hall of Saurian Entombment' stick out.
And, those are the newest additions to my collection for this month* (and thus what I'm listening to)
*I or my friend Trev [Trev bought the Mnemic CDs, and the rest are mine] bought these albums all within the past week and a half, so I'm simply counting it as June.
cheers,
