Kansas City Game Day - A success! Photos on page 12.

Mark, yea it does seem weird. I guess their motivation is to not upset the guys that regularly use that space for their own game. I can respect that on a certain level.

However, it is why I'm still leaning on looking for hotel space where we would have more control, and more time available.

p.s., I 'm going to TableTop at lunch to talk to the owner to get his thoughts on all this.

KUGAR meets in the dining area on the third floor, which is essentially the northwest corner of the building. We'll be back by where the big-screen TV is now. The union just expanded that area, so we'll have quite a bit more space back there than we need. I'll be there about 6:15, probably. Ask for Dylan.

Myths and Legends is actually out in Independence (near Noland Rd and Hwy 78). The two up North of the river used to be Amber Road and Comic Cavern. They are both long defunct.

As for Pirate Games, I'd just call information but, I wouldn't get my hopes up. They are notoriously bad at keeping their affairs organized. :(

Good luck on organizing your game day. And keep us updated but, to be honest, I think ShaunCon/ThunderCons problems are more a reflection of the Kansas City gaming community than the ability, or inability, of the RPGKC, to get their shyte together.

Actually, the north of the river shops that are defunct are Amber Road and Eddies The Next Generation. Comic Cavern is still open -- though, as the name implies, they're really about comics. I was in there a couple weeks ago. Slim RPG selection. Mostly comics and magazines.

If nothing else, this thread has been responsible for de-lurking several people. Hello, TeeSeeJay!

Not a longtime lurker, at least; today's my first visit. I just had to register when I saw a Kansas City thread.

What, exactly is a GameDay, anyway? a Mini-Con sort of thing?

Well, something like that. It's a chance for people to get together and game. Our initial thought was to just meet at TableTop (in Lenexa) and we may still do that.

Our, if we work at it, I'm all in favor of organizing an actual convention, which the KC area so desperately needs.

:) Welcome to the boards! :)

Yupper, a sort of one day mini-con, but usually without booths or the other such trappings. I think Piratecat, Board administrator extraordinaire got that ball rolling when he invited some folks from these boards that live in the Boston area to his home for a weekend day of gaming. Since then there have been several in Chicago, one in Ohio and plans for several more elsewhere (Tampa, N.C. and, of course, K.C.) Lots of fun, for sure! :)

I talked to Phil at TableTop today.

He's a very knowledgeable, friendly guy.

He said that we might consider just having a kind of social to start with, and see what kind of turnout we get. He's more than willing to offer up the game room, since that's what its for. He said to do a full-fledged con at a hotel or something is a huge risk, and a big undertaking - one that he was just unwilling to do. He'd love to do one, but he believed that the risk was just too great.

He encouraged me to check around at some of the local hotels and see what they charged for their conference rooms. He suggested getting one with a lot of smaller rooms, versus a huge room, because the noise level would be too intense, and would detract from the experience.

He had no problems with offering the room up on a Saturday, but just mentioned that he'd need a fair amount of notice, since the tournaments and stuff would be starting to pick up, and he'd need to plan ahead.

He also mentioned that two other people had already come in and talked to him about the same thing. :)

So, what do you guys think - try for a small get together and see how it turns out? Perhaps we could even set aside some time at our game day to discuss the possibility of establishing a convention.

When I get a chance (been far too busy at home and work), I'm going to call around to some hotels to see about costs, and what kind of rates there are.

Thoughts?

If not a lot of people show up, I think Tabletop would be a fine place to have it. Otherwise, a hotel conference room would be ideal. My small gaming group down here in Olathe (all three of us) is interested, whether it be big or small. Phil is great at what he does. Even if he doesn't play or use a particular product, he at least makes sure he knows a little about everything he carries. Name the time and place and we'll be there.
