You might get better response if you put your rough-draft rules for the spell in your post.

That 250GP focus should not 'wear out'; it's good forever once you make one.

I'm not seeing the in-play use. It embarrasses two NPCs. A clever (or annoyed) DM can still have them raise the alarm, call for Counterspell / Dispel Magic, &c.
