Well, I think I'd make the bird a tiny magical beast, with a continous Expedious Retreat effect and haste as a spell-like ability.... :p

The kiwi is a tiny, flightless bird. Despite having a long beak, it defends itself with sharp-clawed feet; and even with short legs, it can outpace the typical human.

Combat

*Low-light Vision (Ex): Kiwis can see twice as far at night than during the day, but this is not very far at all, perhaps 10 ft. at most.

Scent (Ex): Under windless conditions, kiwis can detect opponents by sense of smell within 30 feet.

Skills: Kiwis gain a +5 racial bonus to Hide checks.

Low-light Vision (Ex): Kiwis can see twice as far as humans on a moonlit or torchlit night, with as much detail as seen during daylight.

Skills: Kiwis gain a +6 racial bonus to Hide checks.

======

The parts about outrunning humans and defending with claws I got off the web. I don't know if they really have low-light vision. That's just part of the standard animal package. You can take it out.

A Kiwi HAS to have the scent feat (its how they get food afterall!)

Also - a comparison was once done and the Kiwi actually has more in common with dogs than it does most other bird species - ergo use the stats for a small dog! but replace bite with claws and give it a beak...

You're right about scent. The text I read said nothing about their smellability, but I found it in another article. I added Scent and subtracted 2 skill points to compensate a bit.

They are only like dogs in their reliance on scent, however, so there's no reason to base all the other stats on a dog.

Yay, thank you very much. One last question: is it weak enough to give +5 feet of movement to its master if it was a familiar? If not what should it give?
