According to the numbers @Parmandur showed in the article he linked, adults were the majority of sales for the D&D movie, as you'd expect when 75% of your players are adults.
But does that mean? How does targeting this adults work? Do I have to stop being a child because I am over 50 and have three kids? What if I don't like rogue one?

It's a PG-13 movie. However, 18-34 is a distinct group
That is false. 18-34 is not a discreet group. Those that are 18(as a group) don't have the same goals and drives that those who are 30+(as a group) have. Hell, they probably aren't even the same as those who are 25-26. What people want changes as they age, which is why so many young marriages end in divorce.
from older people in their buying habits and interests.
Would that be older people as in 35-40? 41-45? 46-50? 51-55? And so on, because as I point out above, groups change over time. Not as drastically at these age categories as 18-24, 25-30, and 31-35, but still changed.

Yes, 18-34 is a discreet group in sociological terms. They have a distinct cluster of economic behavior, which is why people in that bracket are targeted aggressively as a block by companies.

Right, because 18 year olds and 34 year olds all like the same stuff. Or else they don't. There are more brackets than that in that range.

Sure, but that's the range that marketing focuses on because they share more in common behaviorally speaking than they do with the 35+ crowd, and teens tend to go for the same stuff. This is just how the market works: willing it to not be so isn't going to change how corporations seek to maximize their income.

I seriously doubt that 34 year olds have more in common with 18 year olds than they do with 35 or even 40 year olds.
