KotOR 2

Most important thing for me was having a good time. There were times when I'd put my hero into a one-on-one battle and just sit back, grab some popcorn, and watch her go to town.

I will confess to minmaxing two areas. I went to Tatooine and went to the Krayt Dragon's cave bloody and battered, thinking "And then I'll hop on back to the ship afterward." I wasn't even suited for combat. I had a lowish level... Juhani? The Guardian Jedi babe. I had her, and she wasn't terribly well equipped at the time, and I had Mission, who I love to have along for the ride but who isn't a combat machine. And wouldn't you know it, the frelling bounty hunter was waiting for me outside. Calo or whatever his name was. I got killed repeatedly, and finally I gave up and gamed the system a little bit. I'd noticed that Calo waited until I moved forward to turn from normal to hostile, so I, er, dragged my team to the back of the cave, turned on stealth mode, headed out to the big bounty hunter, and dropped every mine I had between me and him. Then I lobbed a grenade as a way of saying howdy, turned tail, and ran for all I was worth. The mines took out most of the flunkies as they chased me and worked through a lot of the bounty hunter's vitality.

Pretty much the same thing in the final battle. I was able to fight Malak to a standstill, but I just didn't have the power to go toe-to-toe with him repeatedly. So, after kicking his butt the first time, I burned through most of my medkits while running around the room destroying those dark-side coffins and freeing the souls of my fellow Jedi, and when that was done, I turned tail and ran, making it to the locked door and then turning around for a desperate last stand... and then Malak took about a third of his vitality coming down the ramp and through the mines to get me (until he cheated by Force-jumping the rest of the way). Not my finest or most honorable hour, but I was a Scoundrel. It's kind of expected.

Since the game seems to allow for the possibility that Revan ended up a Dark Jedi who killed Jolee in KotOR, it would be kind of difficult to have him in the game.

Yea, last time I saw him, he lay dead at my feet. :)

Malak was a breeze with my dark side Soldier/Guardian. I just ripped the vitality out of the jedi before Malak had a chance to. Level three Knight Speed, maxed out feats with a double lightsaber, and maxed out rapid strike made quick work of him. It took about 3 rounds. ;)

I was a lightside Soldier/Guardian myself, in a starforged robe with 2 lightsabers. I used throw lightsaber to disable the coffins, and Force Whirlwind to wear down malak get some distance between us. After the coffins went down I went through about half a dozen hyper stimulants of various types and malak went down in seconds.

However the above was the reload, first time I fought him I figured why mess with the coffins just wail on the evil S.O.B and put him down three times... of course it occured to me then that each time he went down he was getting up tougher after each and every recharge from my fellow lightsiders in the coffins... and fourth combat with him i couldnt even touch him and he made short work of me.

I was a little disappointed that the actual nature of the final combat for KOTOR is exactly the same as the end battle for the SOU expansion for Neverwinter Nights effectively.... even so it was very dramatic and atmospheric and I enjoyed it anyway.

KOTOR rulled the universe from beyond the grave so KOTOR2 has a lot to live up to. One of the biggest things in my mind that amazes me was that my friend Rob actually finished this game. He hasn't finished a game since the original balders gate. Any game that can keep his attention long enough for him to finish it is flat out astounding. I've played the game through 3 times and I never replay rpg games. I really looking forward to the sequel but I'm also worried that my expectaitons may be too high.

Just a point of clarification:

Bioware was not 'canned'. They were so busy making the killer RPG "Jade Empire" that they didn't have time to work on KOTOR 2. So they sub-contracted it out to Obsidian.

KOTOR 2 uses the same engine from KOTOR 1, although slightly enhanced. Incidentally, Jade Empire uses an enhanced KOTOR engine as well and seems to be similar in structure to KOTOR. It takes place in a mystical Chinese-like setting. Your character can learn martial art styles and can be good or bad. You can learn light and dark Chi powers which are somewhat analogous to the force powers from KOTOR.

Unlike the turn-based combat and d20 based system of KOTOR 1 & 2, Jade Empire combat will be all real time and the character progression will differ from the d20 model used in KOTOR.

Isnt Jade Empire only available on the XBox though? I'm sure that was the case otherwise i'd have bought it already :)

I played through twice, and started a third game before heading elsewhere. Great game, interesting and fun.

First time out was a natural inclination guy, he leaned towards the light. Second was Dark Side, much more fun. Third was gonna be light side all the way, but I quit after getting the Fett armor.

I used Canderous and the feline jedi (once Bastilla was gone), Carth & Jolie were too preachy for me. The parts where you had to take a certain person (Carth & Bastilla on the bridge) were eh, but the really irritating part was when I faced off against Malak, and he does the insta-freeze, and Bastilla jumps in...
I was beating the day lights out of him! How could I lose?
BAH!

I have mixed hopes for 2. Even if it's identical with different subplots it'll be fun. I'll just have to see if the story makes sense.
(and, if it searchs for Save files, I wonder which it takes? Will it be the Morgan the Dark Sith or the other guy, whose not as memorable...:)

Both Jade Empire and KOTOR 2 will be Xbox only. There will be a PC version of KOTOR 2. I'm not sure about Jade Empire.

It seems like all of the best RPGs are made by American companies these days. American companies are much more willing to diverge from linear, railroad storylines of Japanese RPGs. I refuse to even play Final Fantasy anymore because the series has gotten so bad. They are little more than slightly interactive movies.
