I just got off the phone with WotC customer service (the supervisor and then the manager). IT IS ILLEGAL TO PHOTOCOPY OR SCAN THE KotS PREGEN CHARACTER SHEETS! However a handwritten copy or a typed copy is permissible (although they can't speak to Canadian or other law).

Could someone at WotC please get a memo from the legal department saying that as long as we promise to play nice we can be free of these shenanigans? ...please?

I assume that upper-cased sentence ends with "and post on a public forum such as ENWorld"? Photocopying for personal use is Fair Use.

You can certainly make copies for your own personal use if you have a legal copy to begin with. That's just basic "fair use". Don't let anyone tell you different!

Apparently not because it contains propritary rules information that they have copywritted. You are supposed to buy more than one copy, handcopy or cut up. *sigh*

Because it would be easy for them to grant permission to photocopy those pages only (curriculums do it all the time) and because it is the purpose of those pages. WotC is a good company. I was hoping for Dilbert, not Pointy Haired Boss.

Of course it's copyrighted. It's a published work, so it's copyrighted. Nevertheless, copyright law has a thing called Fair Use which allows you to photocopy for personal use. Whether WotC customer service likes it or not.

They are just being ridiculous. And not very lawful...

Actually, I think that that is illegal in most states too.
