Kulan: Knightfall's Heroes of Carnell Game [IC]

Litrix looks at the druid
"After all this, aren't you curious? And besides, resting while that scorpion is around doesn't sound safe. No one answered the call...either they are afraid of the scorpion or there is no one to contest opening the door. There are other doors north of here. Maybe Aureus can open those? I would avoid breaking any of them if possible, but it may yet come to hammer time." he nods at Maur's weapon

Angus stares, his mouth agape with disbelief for a few moments.

Finally, he says, "Wow. Ah dinna' expect that. Ah've known Druids who could calm or shoo away big animals, but ah always thought that vermin were too small-brained ta' be influenced lock that. Ah'm guessin' ah was wrung."

Angus nods at Caerth with admiration and respect. He is clearly impressed with Caerth's ability.
"I only scared it away," Caerth notes once he's returned from his dire owl flight over the ruins. "It is using these ruins as its lair. If we disturb it again, it might attack again. We should leave it be."

Caerth finishes his flight over the ruins, then returns to his companions. He hoots once, then realizes he cannot speak in this form and changes back into his half-orc self.

Reporting what he has seen, he adds, "Best not to disturb anything further. We should just rest and move on."
"If we move on, then I say we leave the horses back at that oasis instead of bring them here," Aureus says. "The scorpion might eat them."

"Would kill and eat them," Caerth notes.

"This place is bit of a mystery," Phar adds. "But we can always come back here after we deal with Eike. He's the priority right now."

"Who do you think built it?" Quinn asks.

"Definitely not my people," Phar replies. "Humans, most likely."

"Curiosity could lead to one or all of us getting eaten," Caerth replies matter-of-factly. "There could be other vermin."

"Maybe if you feed it," Aureus jokes. "It will like you."

"Vermin creatures don't think the way animals do," Caerth replies with a stern look.

Aureus nods to Litrix. "I'm willing to try opening those other doors. I'm curious."

Caerth shakes his head in frustration.

"I know, I know! It's a risk." She looks pleadingly at the half-orc druid. "But there might be something in that courtyard worth salvaging. If we're cautious, the scorpion might not attack again."

"It probably will," Caerth insists.

Aureus looks at Quinn, Maur and Angus. "What do you think?"

"I think we should move those rotting logs of wood and go in through the hole in the wall. Or, we could climb up onto the roof and go through the broken skylight." Quinn suggests.

Caerth sighs. He getting outvoted.

"Let's stay off the roof," Phar says. "I'm fine with going in through the break."

"No one is answering and the scorpion retteated. Let's use the time to get inside. We saw the opening in the wall, no need for doors."
Litrix starts toward southern corner, but stops before turning corner, waiting for others to join.

Aureus looks at Litrix quizzically for a moment.

"It's this way," she says to him with a big grin, her tail swishing. She points to the north side of the building. "That's the way to the privies."

She heads north and Phar is soon following her. He's shaking his head.

Quinn is the next to follow after he puts away his spiked chain and unsheathes Cruel Justice again. "We will need your light," he says to the intelligent adamantine scimitar. The blade responds silently by releasing its bright light, but it still remains silent to all but Quinn.

"Is he still sulking?" Aureus asks.

"He is being more careful about what he says out loud," Quinn replies quietly. "There my be foes watching us."

Caerth waits for Maur and Angus to go next and he nods to Litrix to join them. Once the dragontouched passes him, the half-orc druid walks beside him. "Don't mind Aureus's sense of humour. It can be annoying, but it can also be helpful."

The rotting pile of fire wood doesn't take too long to clear away. It is a smelly job but a simple one. Maur inspects the breach and finds that it should hold as long as no one touches the walls. The hole in the wall is indeed big enough for Angus.

Quinn helps Maur clear away the rotting debris. It is full of tiny normal critters that have made the rotting wood their homes, but there isn't anything dangerous. Phar sits on a stump and waits for the other to finish. Caerth helps relocate some beetles and worms to some dead trees that stand near the breech.

Once the way is clear, Aureus takes the lead and steps carefully into the breech. She freezes as she hears something moving around on the far side of the pitch black room, which seems to stands empty except for piles of debris on the other side of the room and large grate in the centre of the floor. She quickly steps outside and shakes her head.

"There is something in there," she says. "I couldn't see it, but I heard it. It sounded like something was scraping against stone."

Quinn steps into the breech and holds Cruel Justice in front of him. The light spills into the dark room. "I don't see anything. Just rubble."

Whatever is in the room stays hidden.

"It's probably a frightened creature," Caerth insists. "We should leave it alone and leave."

"Do you sense any malice, Maur?" Phar asks.

"Do I look like a paladin, elf?!" Maur grumbles to himself as he goes forward "I guess I do too. Remove the light Quinn, please, I can see better in darkness."

Concentrating for a moment, he seeks foulness in the dark, standing ready with a drawn hammer.

OOC:
Move to the square under and to the right of Quinn ("south-east")
Lenses of revelation: Standard action detect evil outsider or undead

Quinn nods and Cruel Justice's light goes out with a simple mental communication. In the darkness of the room, the dwarf champion doesn't sense any presence of undead or a foul being from beyond this plane. He also doesn't see any anything moving in the darkness, but he can hear it just fine. Whatever it is is trying to remain hidden.

His dwarven darkvision also see that there is another breach in the far wall that leads to another darkened room. That hole is considerably smaller and even Maur would have to squeeze through or break through with his hammer. He notes another set of stone double doors to his left and the grate on the floor 20 feet away. Two empty torch sconces flank the double doors.

Besides rubble, the room is empty. There aren't any columns and the walls are quite bare. More than likely this room was used as dining hall or maybe sleeping quarters. The floor is sandstone and there is sand piled up around the rubble near the breach. There is only a scattering of light dust in the rest of the room, although with the rotting wood gone, the wind is now spreading the sand out into the room.

OOC:
So, Quinn's right or right on the map? West or east?

"Nothing from beyond the veil. But there is something. Turn the light back on."
Maur looks into the gloom and steps forward again.
"Show yourself. We're not here to fight, but we will if we're attacked!"

OOC: 5' step forward and no more, he doesn't trust there aren't any traps. And his armor locks in place (+2 AC)

"Nothing from beyond the veil. But there is something. Turn the light back on."
Quinn nods again and the light from Cruel Justice flares to life. "Careful, my friend."

Aureus looks towards the inner doors. She seems to be itching to go and inspect them, but she doesn't move.

Maur's challenge is met with a loud hissing sound and the rubble in front of him seems to shift. He immediately understands that most of the 'rubble' is in fact a giant snake that is coiled up. The snake is very large and its head becomes visible in the gloom. It's eyes open and it glares at Maur. It hisses again.

The dwarven champion can see that the snake looks to be in rough shape. While it could still have some fight left in it, the animal has several deep gashes in its length. As well, the snake seems to bulging from within. Perhaps it has recently eaten?

It hisses again... but the hiss is weak. The animal lies down its head but keeps its eyes open and focused on Maur and Quinn.

"That is an impressive specimen," Quinn notes.

Aureus steps back and motions to Caerth. "There is a huge snake in there."

"Well, then leave it alone," Caerth insists.

"It has eaten someone or something...roughly human sized. Are you sure, Caerth?" Maur asks "Or it is pregnant? How does one see if the snake is pregnant? It is also badly wounded, you could try to talk to it or even heal it."

Maur focuses on the bulge, trying to see if it still moves and listens for even weakest of shouts from within.

He obeys the druid and steps back. One. Deliberate. Step.

Maur watches the snake intently as he steps away. The animal keeps its eyes on him and hisses again but doesn't move to attack. While Maur isn't sure, he thinks he sees something move under the snake's skin. It could just be a trick of the light. Caerth moves into the room and orders everyone out.

"Dim the light," he says to Quinn. "And step back."

Everyone else moves away. The half-orc druid moves cautious towards the snake. He speaks with a strong tone of voice and makes sure the animal keeps it eyes on him. He is firm but with enough gentleness to let the snake know that he isn't going to hurt her. And, he can tell right away the snake is indeed female and very pregnant.

The expecting snake mother relaxes enough to let the half-orc druid inspect her wounds. She rubs her head against his chest and uses her long tongue to taste the air around Caerth. Then, she lowers her head and closes her eyes.

"She is hurt badly," Caerth says quietly. "I must heal her wounds. She is indeed expecting little ones and she won't survive the birth of her brood of snakelets."

"How'd she get in here?" Aureus asks curiously. She looks back at the large breach. "She didn't come in that way."

Caerth looks at the smaller breach in the room's southeastern corner as her continues to tend to the snakes wounds. "Probably through there. It might be too small for us, but it's big enough for her to get her head through. That's all she would need."

Caerth notes dark splotches around the snakes wounds. The poison in the snake is obvious even without magic. "She'd been poisoned. These wounds are very fresh. She might have been attacked by the scorpion... but these don't look like wounds that would have been caused by a stinger. These look like large spider bites."

"Spiders, great," Aureus says.

"I don't thin this her lair," Caerth says. "She was probably hunting for food and was attacked. She took shelter in this room. If there are spiders nearby, they might be waiting for her die."

"Then, we should help this creature leave here safely," Quinn suggests.

"I agree," Aureus says.

With the animal more calm, Maur is able to take a closer look at the smaller breach in the other wall. It is probably how the animal got in this room. He can see that there are spider webs that are covering it on the other side, but there could be enough space for a smaller monstrous arachnid to get through.

Caerth finishes his treatment of the snake's wound and hopes he's done enough to keep the poison from killing her. "She'll need time before we can move her out of here. Her snakelets need a chance to be born, at the very least."
