Lantern Archons vs. DR

Should a Lantern Archon's attack bypass Damage Reduction? It is described as a "Light Ray" meaning it could be considered a form of energy attack.

The ambiguity arises from the fact that it isn't referrred to as a type of energy in any of the various energy related spells and effects. You can't cast "Protection from Light" or get Energy Substitution: Light.

From everything I've read this seems to be right. They have an attack that cannot be defended against easily. It ignores DR and no resistance applies to it.

Nope. I treat it like Searing Light. No DR. Lantern Archons are weak, and easily killed. Not broken.

I cannot see how DR could apply to a ray of light, even though light is not one of the 5 categories of energy. DR blocks blows, cuts, etc. from weapons or physical attacks. A ray of light just does not qualify.

It doesn't matter what type of energy they are, the light rays are Touch Attacks.

Touch attacks automatically bypass Damage Reduction.

Both a gheales and lantern archon have touch attacks listed as:



Attacks: 2 light rays +2 ranged touch

Light Ray (Ex): A lantern archon’s light rays have a range of 30 feet.

And damage reduction reads:

Whenever damage reduction completely negates the damage from an attack, it also negates most special effects that accompany the attack. Damage reduction does not negate touch attacks, energy damage dealt along with an attack, or energy drains.


So, both of those celestial may attack freely anything with damage reduction. Also, they are not penalized by the use of Antimagic field.
