Looks like the phishers are getting more sophisticated. Got an email that looked like it was a question by a bidder from ebay, but click on it and noticed that the url wasn't from ebay, and went to a login page. The question and page looked totally authentic too.

So be warned!

These phishing scams keep getting better and better, but luckily I'm smart about such things and Gmail usually marks them as scams and removes the links before I have a chance to notice them.

I got one in my work email a little while ago that was really good. It was supposed to be from a bank, asking me to verify my information, though I did not have an account at said bank so I knew it was a scam immediately. What was really good about it was that the link said it went somewhere like xyz.com/something/somethingelse, but it really went xyz.com.something.somethingelse.com. If you looked at it quickly, you didn't notice there were dots instead of slashes, so even somebody smart like me who pays attention to where the links really go might've been fooled.

Then I posted a picture of this link with the tooltip showing where it really went on my online journal so my friends and family could be notified of this scam, and I got a lot of people telling me I shouldn't have done that because unsuspecting people could go through the "link" on my page (which was just a screenshot) and get to the bad page. Some people in my family are not very tech-savy.

Tip to avoid phishing scams: Whenever a company/website sends you an email saying there is a problem with your account, whether it's eBay, a bank, or a forum like this one, ignore any links in the email and go straight to the website in question in whatever way you normally do it (bookmark, typing in the address, etc). If there really is a problem with your account, any good website will warn you in some way as soon as you log in. If you log in and see no indication that anything is a problem then the email was a scam.

Websites NEVER need you to "verify your information for security purposes" and will never send you an email about it. Any such emails you get are probably phishing for your information.
