Law school advice needed

I'm an expat planning a return to the US sometime and want to do some research on law schools.

Can someone recommend some good websites advising people on law schools and prospective careers? I need very practical advice, like how will I earn a living during and after my degree.

I've looked through www.lsat.org but would like some more. I'd particularly like advice aimed at those NOT planning on attending a 'prestigious' program.

I am looking at trying to pick-up a law degree in the next couple of years, but am way too busy for even night school. Depending on how quick you want to get your degree...this might be a way to go. You could look at getting certified as a paralegal first, then clerking or otherwise working for a law firm while taking classes. If you are lucky, you might even be able to get your employer to pay for it ;)!

What area of law are you looking at?

Barron's and US News both rank law schools. So do a few other publications. I'm at Loyola University in Chicago, which I think is maybe just barely in the top 50.

The thing to think about, though, is how good a school is in the areas you're interested in. For example, Loyola is no Harvard or University of Chicago, but our trial advocacy and moot court programs are pretty well-respected. And they gave me money, so rah team!

Also, when applying, you should know that your LSAT score is much more important for law school than your SAT was for college. A high LSAT will definitely make a big difference. To illustrate, I scored 5 points higher on the LSAT than my best friend, and even though my friend had a significantly better gpa (about 0.4 higher than mine) at the same college, I got into much better law schools. Whether you want to take a review course (I didn't, he did) is up to you.

Good luck!

John, if you end up in Davis, CA (UC Davis' law school is quite good), I'd love to meetcha and would like to try gaming with you- I run a couple of games and there are others in the area as well. ;)
