Lay on Hands & Eagle's Splendor

In case someone wonders why no bonus spells for Eagle's splendor enhanced attributes: With Extend spell, you could easily get a bonus slot for the slot with which you cast it plus some others. Since it wouldn't actually cost any slots to cast it but only give you more, it is unbalanced by definition.

I also run it like Hammy does - basically, for any ability like that (even number of turning attempts per day, etc), the player keeps track of how many he's used so far that day. When he wants to use it, he checks to see if his current used amount is lower than his current maximum. If the maximum drops below his used amount, he can't use it, but if the maximum is raised again he can then use it again.

My own ruling would be that if the paladin is under the effect of the ES spell at the moment s/he replenishes his/her powers, then it works. Otherwise no. He just get a load of hit point healing equal to level times Cha at dawn (or any other moment chosen), like his spells, and it's the Cha at this moment that matter.

I handle lay on hands like bonus spells.

i.e. if you keep Eagle's Splendor up for 24 hours, or you have a magic item like a cloak or a rod of splendor, you always get the bonus to Lay on Hands.

If you just cast Eagle's Splendor for a few hours, your Lay on Hands amount doesn't change.

This was the only way that seemed fair to me regarding Lay on Hands.

The big benefit of Eagle's Splendor is the Divine Grace increase and the "to hit"on your Smite Evil.

Which is what Hammy McHamHam proposed, and I agree with.

I just felt that using the word "temporary" conveyed the opposite concept. It wasn't intended as criticism, merely an observation as to the possibility of confusion arising.

I'd treat it like HP. The amount always goes up and down with the attribute, but the used portion never goes away.

I think that is the most sound both by the letter or the rules and for practical reasons.

Stats can easily jump up and down due to spells or antimagic fields at higher levels. The straightforward answer is to look at "how much spent this day" and "how much allowed per day at this moment" to see if the ability is available at this moment.

It is not just Lay on Hands where this bookkeeping arises, but HPs, spells, and turning attempts can also be affected. Keep one simple accounting method and stick to it.

But, it doesn't say anything about how or when his lay on hands gets replenished? All it says is a paladin can lay on hands for so much per day. That's kind of the sticky point. Unlike spells, which specifically require praying for, the lay on hands ability is just there (no waiting).

Or at least, that's the way it seems to me from reading it.

Kalamar e.g. has rules for each priest from each different church when every day is the holy hour to pray... midnight, dawn, sunset, whatever.

I'd handle the temporary healing points (used or unused) that a paladin gains from Eagle's Splendor the same way that the rules handle temporary hit points, as given on pages 129 of the PH.

That leads to weirdness, though.

Put on the Cloak. Note current Lay on Hands points - 10. Add temporary Lay on Hands points from Cloak - 14.

Cure 3 points - 11. Remove Cloak. Temporary Lay on Hands total is larger than 10, so drop it down to 10.

Put Cloak back on. Note current Lay on Hands points - 10. Add temporary Lay on Hands points from Cloak - 14...
