Legend of the Tarasque

I had actually heard of this before I ever saw the monster in D&D. The legend exists in the Time-Life book series "The Enchanted World" in the "Dragons" volume. That series actually has a lot of cool folklore that's useful for gaming purposes, but I'm the only person I know who has copies of it so I don't know how common (or not) it is in libraries, for instance.

When I got my Monster Manual II and saw the original Tarrasque, I immediately went over to my bookshelf and got down the Dragons book to do comparisons. That was when the folkloric origins of a lot of D&D monsters first became apparent to me; the illustration in the MM2 was unmistakably patterned after the original legend (even if the D&D version has much more fearsome powers). No Saint in D&D will take down the big T on her own unless she gets an actual avatar of her god to show up and fight it! :)
