Let's say D&D ceases to exist...what do you play?

Assuming you mean DnD and every variation of it. Then I would likely play what every my group as a whole most wanted to try. We would likely try a wide range of games till we found one we preferred to play.

And to others, no, Pathfinder is not a valid answer, at least not to the question I'm asking - it is a variant or form of D&D.

I'm just curious as to why Star Wars Saga is a viable option and Pathfinder is not? They are both modded versions of the D20 System. And as is stands Pathfinder is pretty far removed from what the D&D brand is at present.

My original answer would have been Pathfinder which is what I'm running now. But since you've excluded it, my answer would probably be HERO System, M&M or give Savage Worlds a try.

In before the close!! ;)

I only play D&D. If d20 isn't a viable alternative, I suppose it's off to video games (which hold little interest for me), taking care of my family, feeding critters, or cleaning fishtanks.

Otherwise, I'd make my own game system... Hags & Harridans ;)

If space aliens suddenly removed all existence of D&D and zapped it away from our memories, I probably wouldn't be playing any rpg games. I think I would be more into poker or blackjack.

I have dozens of RPGs to choose from. I choose different games for different feels already.

To specifically replace my D&D experience (that is to say a game with incredible growth in character ability as a major focus, the desired accumulation of material goods to augment capability, and a fantastical world with a focus on magic at the expense of technology), I'd probably look to Ars Magica, Chivalry and Sorcery, or Everway.

If I was truly desperate, I might look at running Fantasy Wargaming, but let's hope it never comes to that.

While, I would feel bad both out of nostaligia and for the people whose primary game is D&D, it would not affect me. I have, recently, moved on to Savage Worlds as my non-supers rpg (which is Mutants and Masterminds 2e). So, I would continue playing Savage Worlds or, if in the mood for a class/level system, True20.

Because Pathfinder is a variant of 3.5E D&D with all of the same tropes - D&D races, classes, monsters, monsters, magic items, etc, whereas Star Wars is a science fiction (or science fantasy) game with completely different tropes. The division seems pretty clear to me.

As for your last sentence, I'm not sure I agree with you but that is an entirely different conversation. You could very easily change "Pathfinder" to "D&D 3.75" and not miss a beat.
