Limited Wish and metamagic

James McMurray

First Post
Can Limited Wish duplicate metamagicked versions of lower level spells? For example, could a wizard wish for a maximized fireball, a double extended bull's strength, or even a chained ray of enfeeblement?

I'm inclined to say yes, but would like some fedback from the wise minds here.

Thanks

I'd say yes, though you'd have to limit it according to the adjusted spell level. So a silenced, still fireball would be no problem, a quickened fireball would not be possible with limited wish, since you need a 7th-level slot for that!

Well, I wouldn't allow wishing for a quickened anything, since you'd have to quicken the limited wish itself, otherwise you'd be casting a quickened fireball at a casting time of 1 action (for the LW). :)

I do agree on the level limit though. No wishing for sesquicentuple extended persistent Divine Might so you can have a fighter's BAB for 150 days.

LOL, I forgot about the casting time of the limited wish itself. Sure, that would be stupid. Obwiously something only a sorcerer would do ;) (A stupid one, at that. While I don't think that there are so many stupid sorcerers around, there are certainly no stupid wizards around that could cast limited wish.)

Seems like an obvious yes to me. LW can duplicate any wizard/sor spell of 6th level or lower, I take this to include metamagic feats built in. For example, a maximized fireball is a 6th level slot, so it can be done with limited wish. Similarly for other metamagic feats and spells.

The only "questionable" metamagic feat I could see is quicken. Personally, I'd think it would do nothing, as LW must still be cast.

Actually, this opens up a can of worms: if you use LW to cast a spell with a casting time not equal to 1 action, what is the casting time? In battle, can I cast a 10 minute spell in 1 action using LW to speed it up?

Just something to think about....

I would have to say that yes, you could cast a 10 minute spell via Limited Wish. I don't know if there are a lot of 10 minute combat worthy spells out there though. Hmm... Maybe a topic for a new thread? Why not, I'm bored... :)

I'd say that the casting time is the casting time of the other spell or the LW, whichever is more. Otherwise, I could see either wish or limited wish being open to some sort of abuse. Besides, the wish chain makes it clear that it won't get you around gold or XP requirements without making it costly, so I don't see why casting time should be different.

I've seen the sage say before that the casting time is whatever is longer. LM or the spell it's replicating.

Personally I'd allow the spell to be cast as a full round action instead of the replicated spell time.
