If I remember correctly the highest I ever went to from scratch was 9th level - a half elf cleric 5/wizard 4.

But our campaign went pretty slow. I think that one went for eight months???

A PC in my last game went from 1st to 12th ... that campaign seems to have died, but may just be on hiatus. I blame christmas and the new season of 24.

No, I've never played or DMed a game from 1-20; I'd like to.

I started a 2nd ed campaign at 1st, ported it over to 3e at 2nd, and the characters lived on to 22nd level at the end.

2 campaigns from 1st to 30th (one 2e, one 3.x)

7 campaigns from 1st to 20-21.

5 campaigns from 1st to 18th.

A number of other campaigns that went from 1st to between 14th and 16th

The curse of 13...

Twice I have played a character up to 13th level only to meet my un-timely end. The other characters in that game are just reaching 15th and that is the highest I have ever seen.

My longest running character is a 1st Ed. converted to 3.5 over time Monk who has reached the ripe old level of 7. This is a PbeM campaign that has gone on for what has to be about 8 years now and has resulted in over 2000 pages of written, narrative campaign text. Good reading, but slow leveling.

Follow-up question: Have you ever seen a PC, in any edition, rise in play from 1st level to 20th level?

Yes, many times. I played 11 of them myself. DMed a couple of dozen, spread out through every edition of D&D. That does not include 7 more dual/multi class characters I played in 1E/2E that got into the mid to high teens in all their classes either, nor another dozen or so PC's that I DMed over the years that gained similiar levels.

I ran a campaign in college from 1st to 16th. That's the longest that any game I've ever been in has gone. By the end, only two of the founding members of the party were still around.

The game I run now, and the game I play in, both show some signs of lasting a respectably long time - I'm angling, of course, for 20th level or higher. Mostly because I take great joy, as a DM, in watching the players develop their characters.

Of course, that assumes we don't strangle each other to death first...

The highest I've played in was 10th level (starting at 1st) but most games recently never go that far at all. What I wouldn't give for a 1-20 game!

Currently, as a player, I've gone from 1st to 22nd level.

In my own campaign, the players have gone from 1st to 25th level.

In the longest lasting campaign that I ran, the characters started at 3rd level, and ended up ranging from 26th to 32nd level.

The highest I've ever had a character that started at 1st get to was 17th.
