Minor digression - I just have to say this is why I love ENWorld. I know maybe a dozen people I could discuss this subject with and it would be logistically impossible to get them in a room. But here all it needs is a single thread and there's a bunch of informed opinions about the subject. All of you rocketh greatly!

In the issue of DC Secret Origins featuring featuring the JSA hitler gains the Spear of Destiny and uses it to summon unkillable valkerie warriors that assasinate the president, as well as make his super bomber planes fly incredibly fast so they could reach DC in minutes. In this post-crisis version there is no "mind control field" and the heroes are actively opposing the nazis, though at the time it was set america had not yet entered the war, nor japan. At no point is it explained or touched upon as to why the spear the pierced christ's side would summon female warriors from norse myth, bu there you go.

Assume that the Thule Society used it as a focus and a source of raising Absolutely Honking Magical Power. This, of course, means that at some point someone's going to have to go knock over Nuremberg Castle, wax the SS Round Table with extreme prejudice, and steal the Spear so that Superman can go spank the Axis High Command.

Also, do the Holy Blood Holy Grail people talk about the Spear of Destiny/Bleeding Lace?

Not to my knowledge. They're mostly about the Merovingians being the blood descendants of Christ. At no point do I recall them mentioning the Spear, especially since they put more of a conspiratorial/materialist spin on it.

Of course, that's also immense fodder for gaming, and seems almost tailor-made for Birthright (where Michael Roele's, um, "accident" with a lonely noblewoman is spirited away to safety in the chaos following Roele's death at the hands of the Gorgon).

Well, if their interpretation of the Holy Grail as being code speak for Mary Magdalene's womb then I think it's pretty obvious what the Spear of Longinus stands for.

Actually, that would be a pretty nifty nickname for a guy to give his.

And if we're talking Spear of Destiny, Alfie Schickelgruber, and DC continuity, we can throw in Cthulhu (Mountains of Madness--Feitheria) as part of the package.

Barbarossa won many a battle, until he drowned in a river after falling from his horse, spear passed on, HRE slowly declined....
Almost.. like the Ring, um, the Spear was trying to get back to it's master...

A better pic of the Hapsburg Lance...

FWIW either The History or Discovery channels recently aired a show about the scientific testing of the Hapsburg Lance. The results are as mentioned by Dogbrain.

Still it is a interesting weapon with an intriguing history.

Of course, historically speaking, the person who stabbed Jesus with a lance wasn't actually named Longinus, but the Biblical unnamed was given that name down the road. "Gaius Cassius Longinus" did exist though, and was one of the co-conspiritors of Caeser's death.

Also, Neon Genesis Evangelion's Lance of Longinus was probably, like everything else in NGE, supposed to be metaphor.

Kind of on that subject

There are a lot of relics associated with Jesus, some interesting, others, such as the aforementioned Holy Prepuce, quite humorous.
