D&D 5E Looking at multiclassing sorc/bard

Himoura

First Post
Originally i was looking at a Sorc(16)/Cleric(4) light armor ranged with a bow, but then started noticing that i would need Dex/Cha/Wis to actually make it work so i dumped that idea now i'm considering a Sorc(14)/Bard(6) probable as either a Halfelf (+2 cha, +1 dex, +1 wis) or maybe a human and get a feat or some such. Looking at the college of lore for bard and Draconic Bloodline (probable gold) for sorc.

Any feedback would be good, is it viable or am i wasting my time with this MC?

If you want feedback you need to tell us your goals for that character.

Are you building an archer? Or a spellcaster?

What kind? Using what tactics?

Otherwise it's hard to answer "will a Sor14/Bard6 work?". Sure it will "work". But it will have made sacrifices too, and it won't be as good at certain things as a Sor20 or Bard20. So you need to tell us what you want the build to do well...

Also, you're talking as if the character will be level 20. Is that true? (Since a Sor14/Brd6 might be seven kinds of awesomesauce, but that is less than relevant if you will be playing at level 7 or 13)

Quiet right sorry about that. Starting at level 1 i believe the game doesnt start til next week. But if i survive to 20 i forsee it being Sor14/Brd6

im the long run see it being a spell caster with the bow as backup, I was looking for an offensive caster with the ability to cast healing spells and also access to more spells but have the draconic f. I'm not sure what sort of damage i can achieve with spells vs the bow as the character hasn't been rolled but i'd like to think i'd have a +2 dex and hopefully a +3 cha.

If i start as a bard with the bow it would be my primary weapon as the bard doesn't seem to have too many damage offensive spells.
the bow would be something like d20 +4 doing d8 +2
vicious mockery seems to be the only damage dealing cantrip which would have a will save but would be d20 +5 doing d4

If i start as a Sorc i could go with the xbow but on the other hand i would have firebolt probable which would probable be d10 damage. having said that the xbow would be going off the above stats d20 +4 doing D8 + 2
firebolt would be doing something like d20 +5 doing d10 (is it a straight d10 or d10+cha, i wasn't sure on that)

Have i got all that right or have i made any mistakes in the math

Firebolt would be a straight 1d10.

If you are looking for an "offensive" caster that also heals... I would suspect that Cleric would actually be a better choice than Bard. The Cleric at least has Sacred Flame as an offensive cantrip, then Guiding Bolt at 1st level. If you go Light Domain you also have Burning Hands at your disposal as well I believe.

The other possibility would be if your DM allows options from the Unearthed Arcana articles, because you could then take the Favored Soul build of the Sorcerer. You then have all of the Sorcerer's offensive spell capability, plus the Cure Wounds spell as part of the FS's domain spell feature.

As a last piece of "advice"... the one thing I always tell my players is to never bother with a 20-level "build" concept... because once the game starts playing any and all of your ideas go right out the window once you see how your character plays. I have yet to have any of my players feel the desire or need to multiclass, because their characters have transcended the mechanics. The need to squeeze a bit of extra efficiency out of what they do by finding that elusive bit of synergy with a multiclass has gone right out the window. My Bard player plays a Bard and levels him as a bard because... well, he's a bard. That's who he is in-game. So he has no need to worry about changing classes just for some supposed mechanical benefit.

Just my 2 cents.

I was considering the cleric but we go back to that problem that i suddenly need 3 stats Wis/Cha/Dex, If i get 3 good rolls then possible a cleric/sorc might be a possibility but if i only get 2 decent ones then i think it would be a bard/sorc. The other reason i like the bard is it gets a really good amount of skills 6 skills by level 3 add half helf to that and suddenly its 8 where as cleric i would have 2 + 2 for halfelf when i multiclass into sorc i get another 2 (i think) and I've got 10 with a bard/sorc or 6 with a cleric/sorc

Multiclassing into sorcerer doesn't give you any skill, you could do well with a bard/sorcerer, but I would look into favored soul of life if I were you. You would need only charisma and dexterity, and if you go variant human with the skilled feat you start with 8 skills (2 from background, 1 from human, 2 from class, and 3 from skilled) So 8 skills, armor, shortbow with two attacks, healing and support spells, plus room to grow offensive if you want.

If you really need the draconic flavor or can't use favored soul, then one level of bard at first, then all others in sorcerer give you that, I wouldn't take more than 3 levels in bard though, every level in bard delays you getting more metamagic and offensive spells, more than 3 and you miss on wings and wish.
