Looking for advice: simple multi attacking fighter-type

One last option DOES exist, whirling barbarian from primal power. You can get a load of attacks with that, both at-will and encounter. Pretty crazy. I haven't played one, so I'm not exactly sure about the build details, its been a while, but I don't think it is overly complex.

Thanks, folks - Knight it is. Amusingly, a halfling knight with a craghammer that's bigger than she is!
For a halfling knight, the Talenta Weapon Training feat could be good. It would let her use a Talenta sharrash with +2 damage -- it works out to the same average damage as the craghammer but with a +3 proficiency bonus. Small Warrior's Defense is quite nice, too.

A +2 weapon would also help with damage. If she's not using her 6th-level item slot for it, she could get one from the Noble theme.

One odd thing... I'm not sure the CB is taking Melee Training into account. At 5th (starting level), she has a melee basic of 1d10 + 4, a +1 weapon, and a CON of 20... I suppose that's 1 (weapon) + 1 (class) + (5/2), but it seems pretty dreadful.

Cleave is tasty though. 5 damage, there you are.
Actually if you hit with a least two attacks in one round using cleave you've dealt more damage than a strength buffed knight would.

Oh if you're using magic items she'll want bracers of mighty striking (+2 damage with melee basic attacks).

20 con is maybe a bit too much... as you still need str for the punsihment if you miss, and if str is higher than con/2 it is still your damage bonus...

also i am not sure if the craghammer is a great weapon for the small knight, a one handed hammer seems like a better idea if you look at the knight´s abilities...

1) "A guardsman", AKA fighter or similar background;
2) Relatively simple to play;
3) Can attack groups of bad guys.

The best thing would be an Essentials-esque melee character with blast 2 or close burst 1 at-wills. I haven't found anything like that.
There is, indeed, no such thing.

1) Tempest fighter. Encounter burst 1 and at-wills that target two monsters are good. Marking mechanic is a little fiddly; she really doesn't want to remember rules.
Marking is only as fiddly as remembering who you swung at last round. Not too big a deal.

For a straightforward fighter build, just take: Threatening Rush (at will, marks all enemies adjacent to the target, useable w/charge) and Cleave (attack one, hit a second if you hit, good for mowing through minions), then pick Close Burst 1 encounters and dailies as available (the fighter has a fair number). Particularly fun things to look forward to: Come & Get It, Rain of Steel, Thicket of Blades.

The Tempest /is/ a bit fiddly, though, in that it's powers are a lot of move-attack-move-attack, dancing about sorts of things. A greatweapon fighter with the above powers hits hard and hits often, I've seen players with a preference for 'simple to play' characters have a lot of fun with that kind of build.

Oh, and a dragonborn fighter can mark with his breatweapon...

Is there something that I'm missing? Is there a melee Essentials class that gives you at-will burst 1 capability?
Certainly. They're just not melee 'guardsmen' types, they're ranged Controlers: the Hunter and the Mage.

Hilariously, I could see an Invoker being a 'guardsman' type. "STOP IN THE NAME OF THE LAW", but actually invested with the divine authority to magically make them stop in the name of the law....hahahaha.
