Looking for Players: Prison Based PBP

First Post
The Kingdom of Kerendau has been besieged by its island neighbor to the east, Decandu. War has torn the nation apart over the last five years as the Decandese have advanced. The people of Kerendau fought hard against the onslaught, however in the end, Kerendau’s military was not strong enough to make a stand against the forces of Decandu.

The even after the Kerendau government fell to the Decandese, the people of Kerendau resisted the invaders, forming rebel groups who combated their new rulers through gorilla tactics.

The Decandese response to the rebels was quick and harsh. The Decandese stormed villages, killing men women and children. Others were captured and sentenced to military prisons, where they were destined to spend the rest of their lives.

After a brief stint in a kangaroo court where your character was sentenced to life in Hellmaw. You were then shuffled out the backdoor of the courthouse and placed into a holding pen. The person in front of you and the one in back of you were taken to another line, one approaching a guillotine. As you breathed a sigh of relief and muttered a prayer of thanks under your breath, the person standing next to you told you not to count your blessings just yet.

“The Hellmaw,” he whispered “is an island prison that has housed Kerendau’s most vile prisoners for centuries. What waits there for us could very well be a fate far worse than death.”

What lies in store for your character? The fight for Kerendau will be a role-play intense grim and gritty game set in a gritty fantasy world. Your character will experience the trials and tribulations of prison life as he struggles with every choice he makes, weighing his personal values against his ability to survive in the Hellmaw.

Will your character have what it takes to survive? Will life in the Hellmaw make him abandon his values, or will he face tribulations to maintain the ideals he holds dear. Will he be able to escape and reclaim the life he had prior to the invasion? Will he set out for vengeance against Decandese?

Hello,

I’m looking for 1-6 players for a freeform PBP game that I’ll be playing on my forums. Ideal players for this game are those who enjoy intense role-play, not just another dungeon crawl.
Those who prefer a game with little setbacks to their characters and easy victories with mounds of treasure won’t likely enjoy the game. Those who like to play a Half Ogre/Half Dragon/One-Third Celestial Succubus probably won’t enjoy the game.

If the idea of character driven story and plots based on moral choices made day in and day out appeal to you, however, this game should offer up some interesting challenges.

I’ve decided to run the game as a freeform game. I previously ran the concept in a D20 game, but I found the system didn’t really meet my needs (Not that I don’t like D20, I do.)
I was going to try the PBP using Riddle of Steel, but I’ve decided against it; I like the idea of the system for a grim and gritty game like this, but I don’t have the time to learn the ins and outs of the system. Instead, I’d like to run it freeform as most of the game lends itself to role-playing and political struggle anyway. Any combat that evolves can be handled through role-play as well. When the need for chance arises, I can take care of that. I guess what I’m looking for is the chance to create a cooperative story; I’ll set the backdrop if you set the protagonists.

Anyway, if anyone is interested, or if any of you have questions, please let me know. I’ll try to answer any questions as they arise.

John "The Butcher" Anderson. commonly called Butch.

Below is my concept for 'The Butcher', he's a mentally unbalanced homocidal Healer/Warrior/Inquisitor.

He still needs a bit of fleshing out though.

Are there any levels, classes or skills for your freeform game, or should I just RP it all.

Also I'm assuming this is a medevil fantasy based game.

Concept

John was a regular guy before a Decandese raiding party turned his world up-side down.

John lived in an out of the way village on the fringe on the contested border between Kerendau and Decandu, with his wife and two kids, John and his family had a simple but happy life.

John had always been a quiet and shy boy, who showed an early ability and desire to help the sick and needy, This was noticed by the local aging healer and he was quickly apprentised to the local healer, John showed great skill in the arts of healing and took over the role as healer for the viallge when his master passed away, John also grew to love the healers daughter and it was no surprise when they were married soon after her fathers death.

One night a Kerendau raiding party happened upon the out of the way villiage, The raiding party waited to the depths of night to spring there trap, they easily overcame the villiages defenses and set about destroying the villiage and having some fun.

John was knocked unconscious while defending his home, when he woke he found his family dead and the villiage in ruin. Everything good and pure in his life was gone, destroyed by the Decandese something snaped inside of John, and he was never the same again.

John joined the army and became 'The Butcher' a being devoted to only one thing the destruction of the Decandese, always slight it was thought that John wouldn't make an effective warrior.

They were wrong, as 'The Butcher' John showed no signs of fear for his personal safety, and most opponents were surprised by the manic ferosity and fearlessness of this slight man, weilding a battleaxe.

John soon became known for not only his skill in battle but also for his skill in extracting information from prisoners, due to his understanding of the human body, John was adept at inflicting agonising pain upon his victims while ensuring that they stayed alive sometimes for days on end.

Despite being obviously unbalanced, John was never a danger to those who worked for him, John was never careless and never put the lives of his comrades at risk, and he often proved to be an assets when the fighting was done, as he tended his own men with a gentleness and care that surprised most who'd seen him in a fight.

Interesting concept Lord Raven. There will be no levels in game, though I may refer to D&D terms in order to help establish a baseline as all the players will understand it. For instance, if I said I wanted magic users to limit spells to 1st or 2nd level- strength spells, you would understand what I am saying without having to go into too much explanation.

Anyway, no, there are not levels, classes or skills, though I would like some of this information for the characters. I am looking for their professions (prior to prison), their personality, their strengths, weaknesses, etc.

Yes, it will be a medievil fantasy based game, but the prison will not have you chained to a wall in a dark dungeon somewhere. You will be interacting with other prisoners and guards and have semi-free room to roam. Think Oz in a medievil setting.

Anyhow, if you are still interested, wander over to www.yangnome.com/index.php and register an account. Once you register, you will see the game forums linked on teh left side of teh page (The Hellmaw Forums). I am stepping out now, but once I am back and you have registered, I'll set up a private forum for developing your character with you.

I'm up for it. I've just got the first "Blake's seven" series from my brother, so i'm kinda in the mood..

I'll go for a thief-like figure, but let me get back to you later.
