I think that the brawny monster actually became the hook horror,
kinda like how the fall from the cieling monster became the ethereal marauder.

The hook horror is an old edition creature, though--dates back to early 2nd, if not 1st.

I remember distinctly reading in one of the FR books that Urds were basically kobolds with the Winged template attached.

Not sure if the HD was increased or stays the same, but I definitely remember the part about the winged template.

I know that Urds are related to Kobolds, but I can't ever recall reading this...

Which book is it in??

I could be wrong--it's just a guess on my part--but I always thought the "brawny monster" evolved into the gray render.

If I had to guess, it would have been the hook horror.

EDIT: Must learn to read all posts before posting!

Hmm...maybe it was inspired by the hook horror?

Now what I want to know is where the firearms for FR went, and the tinker gnomes for 3e ;)
No need for special FR firearms when you have perfectly servicable ones in the DMG (and the FRCS even refers to them), and AFAIK Tinker gnomes are in Dragonlance where they belong like the abominations they are.

For the record, I have to agree- Hook Horror was the first thing that popped into my head upon seeing the "brawny (claw) monster." Looks like redone concept art for the creature, but they decided not to go with it for some reason- after all, look how radically the appearance of some creatures changed from earlier editions to 3E. Kobolds, several dragon types, several demons (see particularly the picture of the Marilith in the 3.5E MM and compare with a 1st or 2nd edition picture) are just off the top of my head there.

Well, the Lost monster is this bag, rolling black cloud thing that rips trees out of the ground and attacks people, but only if they are scared of it...

...oh, wait, that's not what you were talking about.
