Tell that to the Ents. While the circumstances are somewhat different in the book versus the movie, it still comes down to two small hobbits convincing them to move to action, most likely before they are utterly destroyed. If creatures that are as ancient as Middle Earth and the elves need to be swayed into action, what makes the eagles less self-involved?

I think you're right that they'd get involved at the end...just like the mayor of Berlin when they came for him. (though I'm not trying to draw that allegory, exactly).

Accualy, the ents primarly got involved because of the "Wanton hewing of the trees, without even the bad excuse of fuling the fires" (A line I missed from TTT).
