I swear, if a video got out of George Lucas using a urinal, we'd have message boards threads with people saying "He's doing it all wrong: you're supposed to shake twice when you're done! What a moron."

Nope.. and apparently neither can we.. I feel it's somewhat sad to have him make statements like this in the midst of a huge media blowout and promotional campaign.

These sort of comments also bug me when I hear them from Kevin Smith.. another director who tends to play the "poor me, I'm untallented, why does anyone pay to see my movies" card too often.

Having read the Time interview and article I didn't find myself more simpathetic.. except he finally admits he accepted he will always be George Star Wars Lucas.. no matter what.

You know the saying: "Geeks always beget Geeks."

AFAIC, it is HIS Star Wars, whether we appreciate it or not, not 20th-Century Fox's or any Hollywood corporate film studios.

Of course, one should know that I have a grudge against Paramount and Viacom over the handling of the Star Trek franchise via their frontman and loyal mook, Rick Berman.

Yeah, that's just the thing. I think it's pretty clear he's been out of touch with his fanbase for some time now. Either that, or he just has a completely different idea of what his fanbase is than I do. I think it'd be great if this is the prequel that really does well. It'd send a message. Then the question is, is he too dense to get it.

I figure there's no way he's simply indifferent toward his fanbase, though ideally that's what I'd prefer, personally: I wouldn't be interested in watching the movies if they were made the way I would make them--I want to see his vision. But there's also the possibility that you and I aren't really his fanbase, or his core fanbase, to begin with. Maybe that's a statistical question (what is the majority demographic of the movies?), or maybe not--maybe the fanbase he has in mind isn't the majority, maybe he doesn't make them for us, in which case that's really the end of it.

As for the original post: I'm shocked to see Lucas' humility picked apart on internet messageboards, those all-important bastions of respectfulness and dignity.

Well, it might be a "mental" problem succesful people sometimes suffer. Maybe it is the reason why they are succesful in the first place - they are never entirely happy and strive for more. And I think these people are a lot more likeable than succesful people that boast with their success and claim to be perfect.

Of course he can. He can't say anything that's kinda boneheaded though, and expect it to go unnoticed. And saying, "my new movie sucks, it'll probably lose money," in the final big marketing push right before it comes out is pretty boneheaded.

There's such a thing as playing the "you're just a bunch of lousy Lucas bashers" card a bit too much, y'know. Save it for when someone actually does bash Lucas unwarranted. ly. Damn, it's too early to figure that word out. :\

But what he said in the CNN article wasn't 'boneheaded' at all. He just said they're recieving a lot of flak from parents and such over the PG-13 Rating, and that CAN be seen as a hint that the movie may not do too well.

He's not saying "my movie sucks". He's never said that. What he always worries about, though, is that no one will ever see it and even if they do, he'll be the only one who likes it. THAT, is not something unique to Lucas, or this movie. Many, many artists are like that. Especially when its something this big. So yes, this is unwarranted Lucas attacking.
