Lucas convinced Ep III will tank?

Your quote was "Man what an ignorant sucker..." which kind of belies what you just said now.

You know.. I just reread that and realized I wrote it that way. Hmm.. guess I did attack Lucas and not the statement as you all pointed out.

Wasn't my real intent..(Need to stop posting again.) It was more voicing my frustration over the comment and the behavior. I think he's a very smart man.. obviously smarter than I am because he created and had a hand in developing not only two of my favorite movie serials but also a lot of the fundimental technology for theater sound. Even if he didn't create THX, he had the brains to sponsor or acquire it..

I was talking about the Guardian article. "George Lucas unveiled the final part of his Star Wars sextet to a select gathering of American journalists at his Skywalker ranch in California yesterday after admitting that he is currently convinced that the film won't make any money."
So it's boneheaded for Lucas to make what, let's face it, was in all likelihood an offhand remark, not any kind of serious pronouncement, to a journalist who will then go home and invent the story of him "admitting that he is currently convinced that the film won't make any money?" Well yes, I agree it's boneheaded to speak to journalists at all, but when you're making movies there's not much getting around it. Whatever sort of self-deprecating speech people are imagining he gave, I doubt that's how it was.

Actually, based on interviews I've seen and read of him, I bet that's exactly how it was.

There's such a thing as playing the "you're just a bunch of lousy Lucas bashers" card a bit too much, y'know. Save it for when someone actually does bash Lucas unwarranted.

That's not what I see when I look at these interviews. CBS' interview from a little over a month ago, for example:
CBS said:
"I don't think I would take a 5- or 6-year-old to this. It's way too strong. I could pull it back a little bit, but I don't really want to," says Lucas, who says he's very happy with the way the movie - and the trilogy - came out.

Most critics hated the first two episodes. But Lucas isn't worried about their reaction. "They haven't liked any of them, really, and they especially haven’t liked the last two," says Lucas. "It's like, hey, you know, it can't get any worse."

But doesn’t it hurt? "Oh, it always hurts. It hurts a great deal. But part of making movies is you get attacked, and sometimes in very personal ways," says Lucas.

"The point is, like if you paint your house white and somebody comes over, 'Well that should be a green house.' Well, fine, but I wanted to paint it white. I don’t think there was anything wrong with painting it white. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with me for painting it white. Maybe it should be a green house, but I didn’t want it to be a green house. I wanted it to be a white house."
In context, the self-deprecating statements don't really fit with the original assessment of this thread. Maybe there is a specific example where these sorts of comments are given, in context, as they have been portrayed here?

RotS may very well do better than TPM or AotC, we'll just have to wait and see. My only point is that calling Lucas an "ignorant sucker" (which you did not, of course) is pretty ridiculous, especially on the basis of equally silly claims like "Episode I and II could not recapture the magic of the originals." I grew up with the original trilogy too, and it bores me to tears these days. AotC (but soon to be *crosses fingers* RotS) is my favorite of the bunch.

You're completely right. I was way off base. I completely agree. I'm glad we aren't discussing my opinion of anything here.. I have learned my lesson.. I will recant my statement. Sigh

I believe I linked to the original content I made my statement about early on.

I appreciate that my comment might not have been the most well concieved post I've ever written but ultimately I was expressing my frustration and views. I am glad that you find AotC and TPM better than Episode IV-VI. We all have different opinions of the works and ultimately you are right, taken out of context what sounds like whining might be sincerely humble comments.

It still does not change the fact I think he's being silly by saying.. I think it will not do well (Paraphrased) the word of mouth about the adult aspect of the film will sell more than anything. You know what.. I'll be taking my 9 year old to see it.. I've read through both the novel and the comic adaption and nothing in this movie will be any worse than a night of network television or Adult Swim anime. I was not meaning to cause such a debate but I guess it is enevitable when discussing Lucas, Star Wars, Star Trek, Buffy, Joss Whedon or anything that people care so deeply about in popular culture.
