If you don't want to answer, I'll understand completely. If you want to answer off the board, my e-mail is torm1975@bellsouth.net. But I have two or three questions, and one comment.

Your two answers would seem to indicate that you were abused as a child. :\ Is that true? And is your second answer colored by that, or informed from a more objective perspective? (If the latter, what are your objective grounds for saying that?)

My comment is that there is a difference between spanking entirely out of darker emotion, and calculated spanking to create a specific psychological effect in a developing psyche that one is supposed to be guiding. Or at least, I believe there to be so, and seem to have seen that born out, both in myself, in my kids, and in some of my friends. Consequence is a lesson we all learn harshly - either from our parents or from life in general. And I consider myself lucky that, for me, it was lovingly from the former, rather than mostly from the latter. (And if you knew my mom, you would know that I say that through gritted teeth where it regards her, but it is true, even if she may be and has been too nuts to really know what love is.)

None of the above is meant to disrespect anyone or their opinion - Frukathka and Treebore included. In the game of life, your milage may most definitely vary. I often appreciate the adult, intelligent way people on this board sometimes handle delicate subjects, and look forward to seeing that here, since it seems bound to become discussion rather than a simple polling.

[edit] Oh, interesting note, a couple of my friends were both spanked as children, but they come up with more creative ways of hurting their child, such as pinching. I find it kind of weird and disturbing, but I suppose it's neither worse nor better than spanking.

Abuse causes physical or emotional harm. Spanking does not, at least not how I define spanking.

This information most definitely will not be used against you in any way. I will not be using screen names, let alone real names in my report. If you like, when my project is finished, I will come back and share the result with you (the final project will be presented to my instructor in the form of a homemade website - it is an online class).

Allow me to say again that I did not/do not wish for this to turn into a debate about the pros or cons of spanking. Of course, you're all adults and if you wish to debate the topic, that is your choice. Just please know that I was truly not trying to incite anything here.
