magic weapon spell question

First Post
would you allow an item, say a quiver of arrows, to have a command activated once per day use of the spell greater magic weapon?
if i calculated corectly (which if far from assured) then for a +1 bonus for 5 hours would cost ~6000 and for a +2 bonus for 9 hours would cost ~10000 ect.
does this sound right? am i missing something?
thanks in advance

The price is misleading in this case since it actualy applies to multiple "uses" - that is each arrow fired gets the benefit - so multiply it by the number of arrows that could be fired, or 20 (as in the number in the quiver when activated).

Au contraire. One casting of Greater Magic Weapon will affect 50 arrows, so if you're going to be counting arrows, you should multiply the cost by 20/50 because that's how large a part of the potential target of the spell that you can maximally activate with the quiver.

But you'd be silly to Pay for such an enchantment on a regular ol masterwork quiver...Quiver of Ehlonna anyone? With 1/day GMW.

BTW, items that cast GMW at high caster levels essentially break the normal wealth by level guidelines...ie...they are cheezey as hell. Because they inevitably lead to a player having a +1 Weapon with +9 worth of abilities added on, then they just CL 20 GMW in the morning and suddenly have a +14 weapon.

Sure they can be dispelled, but when you dispel everyones buffs, they just leave and rest again anyways.

No.

Since ammunition is not reusable, and this would be immensely cheaper and more useful than purchasing a number of magic arrows (not least because you can choose the material type for DR penetration each day).

I couldn't spot it in the text, but assuming the standard cost gives you 50 arrows for your 8000gp normally... and when they are gone they are gone...

So as a DM I'd say 'no'.

By all means attempt to purchase scrolls or wands of GMW though.

that was my feeling... however, i always had a bit of a problem with magical ammunition being not reusable. it just doesnt seem fair compaired to a magical weapon of a permanent nature. then again as you mentioned this version is no good either. am i the only one with a problem?

Only if it's nonmagical. Magical ammo always breaks.

No, he's right: Magic Ammunition and Breakage: When a magic arrow, crossbow bolt, or sling bullet misses its target, there is a 50% chance it breaks or otherwise is rendered useless. A magic arrow, bolt, or bullet that hits is destroyed.

Huh! I'm sorry about the mistake. Was this different in 3.0?
