Malibu Stacey has a new hat!

To those of you who feel WotC "lied" about 4Ed, I must say what my Civil Procedures 1 professor loved to say..."So what?"

WotC is a for-profit business, and from a business perspective, the eventual release of 4Ed was a fact of life once 3.XEd came into its own as a successful product, especially since it wasn't/isn't/will never be perfect.

Of course, and I have no objection to them releasing a 4th edition. What I do have a problem with is them specifically telling us they are not working on 4th Edition, and now revealing that they have been working on it for two years.

Of course they said otherwise- you can't tell people you're working on Product B which will replace Product A if you still want them to buy Product A.

There's a difference between not telling people you're working on product B, and telling people you're not working on product B. One of these is a direct lie.

I agree with whoever it was said that Wizards should adopt the policy that whenever asked about a new edition at any time in the future (even as a joke question the day after the previous edition is released), the answer to give is always "no comment", right up until the point that they actually want to announce the new edition.

I remember when some WotC official stated "There will be NO 4th edition!". That in itself is a good reason for no buying 4e, "4e? What's 4e? They have told us there will never be a 4e, this must be an April's fool or something, Internet is so full of hoaxes (isn't "gleemax" an acronym for "hoax" after all?)"...

Psychologically speaking, when someone pleads the 5th in an American Court- thus opting not to testify in the case- are usually believed to be guilty of something.

Similarly, most people who ask the direct question:

"Are you working on a new edition?"

are going to hear:

"Yes, we are." if they get the answer "No comment."

Especially if they notice unusual behavior from the company, like ending lucrative licenses or killing profitable/popular products.

Instead, most companies in the analogous position simply lie- that's just typical, even sensible, corporate behavior.

Really? That's a "good" reason? If it turns out that it's the greatest game ever created, and immense bucketloads of fun to play, far better than other editions, you still wouldn't buy because you take normal business practices as being personal slights?

The reasons for WotC not being able to discuss developing 4E (and not being able to simply say "no comment", which is as good as a confirmation) were explained earlier in the thread.

"They lied to me" sounds like rationalization of fear of the new and different. I guess grognardism is human nature, after all.

For me, they're taking out the old, worn Malibu Stacey and replacing her with a younger, hotter Stacey. Now, it remains to be seen if Stacey has some substance under those clothes.
Watch out, dude -- she's lying about being 18. I think she's 13 or so.

That's a little misleading, IMO. There've been multiple printings of the core books (currently the Players Handbook and Monsters and Treasure), but changes there are layout or errata-type stuff.

The other "versions" are limited edition or condensed sets that are wholly derived from or highly compatible with the main rules. The Condensed version is a subset of the rules. The Collectors box is a limited run (1000 units) "tribute" to OD&D.

It still doesn't change the fact that I have 3 different versions of C&C sitting on my shelf right now. The boxed set (limited number of classes and spells), 1st printing phb (horrible layout and choked with typos), and the 2nd printing phb (readable version of the game). C&C players can't complain about all the money D&D players spend on new editions when they themselves have to buy the same thing at least 3 times in as many years to get a playable version of the game.

Ha! I'm not falling for the old "That's old enough for my race" trick again! Do you know how long you have to pay alimony for a half-elf girl? Or how long elven courts will set you to jail for having sex with a minor? "Changing the time span you have to spend in jail for that crime because you're a human and not an elf would be racist. Those three decades will be just flying past, you'll see"

Well, I'd bet that a lot of C&C players would contest that "playable version" part, although I'm not speaking from experience; I bought the 2nd printing of the Players Handbook and the first printing of Monsters and Treasure. I've been happy with them. :shrugs:
