Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World

Master and Commander was originally scheduled for a summer release. However, the studios moved it to the Novemeber date, no doubt to boost the film's Oscar chances.

Who can blame them? After all, like or love him, whatever Crowe touches generally turns to gold as long as Meg Ryan isn't in it. :p

Can you name the last time an actor was nominated for Best Actor three years in a row like Crowe? No bonus points for looking it up. :D

I've seen two advertisments the past few days featuring the film as well as a theater trailer a few months ago. Plus, Crowe was featured on the cover I believe, with an inside interview, of Entertainment Weekly's Fall movie or Winter movie preview, whatever they call it.

Thus, I've obviously heard about the film.

Yeah, I've been eargerly awaiting this film since I saw the first trailer. I'm hoping that what's being done is a turn away from the super-hype most holiday pictures get. It might be a plan to 'impress' the Academy, it might not be. Either way, I certainly am looking forward to it.

I would have to guess Tom Hanks.

Good guess, but no. Hanks was nominated for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump in 94 and 95. However, he did not get a nomination for Apollo 13 the next year.

The last one to pull the trifecta off if memory serves was William Hurt for Kiss of the Spider Woman, Children of a Lesser God, and Broadcast News.

And, no doubt, to provide some distance between it and Pirates of the Caribbean.

Good info, by the way.

My DemoDisc certainly did make out like it was going to be a summer release, like the others on the disc.

Anyone else read the books? I went through most of them a few years ago, it will be interesting to see how the movie turns out.

I'm pretty worried about this combination of the 1st and 10th book thing, especially as it would be stretching it, IMHO to even fit a single book into a movie properly. The title, right off... err. It's like calling a movie:

The Hobbit / Two Towers

I tried to but just couldn't stand the writing style. In the end I just went out and bought a biography of Thomas Cochrane. Their pretty much just the same thing expect the books have toned down and missed out on some of his exploits.

I have read the books and I currently reading the Horaito Hornblower books (again for the 3rd time). The writing style does take some getting use to. But the second time through it's not as bad. Great historic naval action and espionage.

Thank you and good point yourself about the studio no doubt wanting to give the audience some time between sea based movies.
