MD-DC-VA Gaming Day Comments...How did you like it?

Comments for next time: variety in game systems is nice, but if one kind of game fills up real fast, you might want to make sure another game of that type accepts the people who want to get in on it.

Downysole,

That was one of the toughest things about organizing this. We had a few games that were cancelled fairly late in the process and some of the players didn't get the word and showed up with no slot. We didn't have a great contingency plan for that.

If there is a "next time", having 2-3 "stand-by" GMs will be a definite.

Btw, that 3D map looked really cool and I think we all stopped by to gander at it at some point or another...I'm going to invest in a set myself for the group.

Thanks. The 3-D map was made with sets from WorldWorks Games. I spent some time in photoshop modifying them to create the balconies. There were a lot of people that looked at them and I'm very impressed with all the sets designed by WorldWorks so I think they deserve the shameless plug.

I certainly hope there IS a "next time" because I want to come! Let me know if you guys start to look into scheduling and I won't plan the next NC Game Day for an adjoining date.

As a quick aside on the "players at loose ends" problem, this is one reason why I don't worry about some games having empty slots coming down the home stretch. At almost every NC Game Day there has been a last minute cancellation of a game and the free space in other games has been able to absorb those extra players. At NCGDV last weekend, the HARP game was completely empty. Then Jeph cancelled his morning game and the players switched to HARP en masse and nobody had to sit one out.

But I also encourage folks to bring along an extra adventure if they've got one they can run on little or no notice. Having the ability to slap together a pickup game is always good.

Glad you guys had a good time and if any of you can make it down here for the next two NC Game Days, we'd love to have you. They are scheduled already for January 29th and April 23rd.

Psion's T20 Traveller game rocked the house! Many great memories there. Hopefully, next year, I can contribute a game of my own in some fashion. Thanks, Psion, and all the other guys who put TerpCon together. Great job!

I had an awesome time! Psion's T20 game was excellent. I had a great time RPing with you Ramien and everyone else at Psion's game. Heck, Psion got my wife to enjoy a sci-fi game, which is a feat in and of itself.

Great! Glad to hear it.

I thought it started off a bit slow (I blame myself for not having reviewed the adventure since I ran it at GenCon), but at least I had my notes in order and one things started rolling, I think it turned out well. It was really interesting to me to see how the game turned out differently for different groups.

I'll have to say this: I am convinced that for a group situation, the T20 system is tops for starship combat because it involves everybody in some way. I was pleased how well it turned out (I didn't get to see it in action for the last two times I ran this adventure, as nobody else fought the pirates.)

I think there is one in the works...

Rel,

I know that DelayedReactionMan (Kevin) and the Terrapin Gaming Club are planning to have another one next semester. Unfortunately, with baby #2 due in mid-December and a hellish spring travel schedule, my opportunities to spend an entire Saturday gaming are rapidly dwindling :p!

I am already planning to take a 6-month hiatus from my Faded Glory campaign after our Nov. session and may extend that to all gaming. :(!

Definitely feel free to coordinate with DRM if you want to bring an NC contingent up!

Awesome time on Saturday. Thanks to everyone in my game for making it a great time, and to the Minister of Sinister for acting out a superb turncoat. Thanks to Rasyr for putting AIM-54, DRM, Kronk, Redhawk & I together for a fun game of HARP, as well as all of the free stuff. Thanks out to DRM and the Terrapin Gaming Club for hosting the event and providing the nice space on a great campus. And of course special thanks to Old One for masterminding the idea and following through with everything.

The space was awesome, and being able to choose our own tables helped out, though we could space them farther from one another to avoid noise issues. The room couldn't have been much better for the event, the tables were huge to have large plans on them and still room for books, and there were extra chairs to throw all of my things on to and keep a little hidden from the players.

Things I learned as a DM:
* You cannot fit 9+ encounters into 5 hours.
* Just because you brought something to drink does not mean you will get a chance to drink it.
* Invisibility Purge will ensure a quick death for backstabbing rogues with invisibility rings.
* Power Word Blinding a PC with Blind Fight is just as useful as a torch under water.
* Holy Aura is powerful. There is a reason it is 8th level. Spell Resistance is rough to get through on smart PCs.
* Intimidation can be the best social skill. Not for making friends, but you always get what you want.
* Smite is nasty. Is it too late to change alignments as a free action?
* Wizards, even when made of iron and doing Dimension Door 'Death From Above' with a surprised tag-along paladin, are not the best grapplers, even underwater. Nor are they good doorstops.
* Walls of Force and Iron can make for a quick cage to seal in a King for his own protection.
* Barbarian rage can last a long time, and the sum of damage in that time can reach 1,000's... yes, 1,000's. And a low AC doesn't mean you're gonna deal as much damage through a DR.
* Damsels in distress must be saved... even when they are found "chained to a wall" in a dank cave...
* PCs have no fear of deep water or drowning, and will grapple water critters even when their swim skill is... poor. They do have a fear of surfacing to take a breath with Cloudkill over the water.

Had a great time at Troll Wizard's game in the morning. I thought we were a good group. Too bad we didn't kill the goblin king though. ;) From the depths of hell I spit at you Oot!

But yeah, let's do this again in the future.

I had a great time! Thanks to both Old One and D'karr for running great games. I'll be looking for both of your games next time. Everyone playing in both games were great as well, I'd be happy to sit at a table with any of you again.

I'll add my thanks to the organisers of the gameday, you guys did a great job! The pics that Xath took are great (aside from my surprised look in both of the pics of me, I need to be more aware of cameras pointed in my direction). Along with Psion, I hope that the ENnies swag is enjoyed by everyone who won something.

I'll agree that the room was loud, but spreading the tables out next time should fix some of the problem. Other than that, the room was great. Big tables with plenty of room, fairly comfy chairs to spend the day sitting in, good selection of food in the food court downstairs, etc.

Overall, definitly worth the 2.5 hour drive up! See everyone again next time.

Hey, Rich it was nice meeting you. I'm glad you enjoyed the game. Definitely some of the most entertaining barbarian moments I've seen in a long time.

Yes, I want to echo the sentiments about how nice it was meeting everybody and getting to put faces with the names!!! The 2.5 hour drive from Charlottesville in the morning (and going home afterwards) was extremely well worth it!!!
