Mead?

Anyone ever try mead? Anyone know where I can actually BUY mead? I've never had it (I'm practically a teetotaller; I just don't see the glories of drinking), but I kind of like one or two glasses of wine a year, and thought I'd like to try some mead.

For those of you who don't know, mead is honey wine.... Supposed to be cleaner tasting than white wines.

It's good, I have some locked away in my house right now.
You can get it at lots of places, I get it at the "Whole Foods" supermarket near my house.

The only mead I've been able to find around our neck of the woods is put out by Chaucers, and you can often find it at Cost Plus. However, it's not the best to be had, IMHO. Some mead shares a lot in common with a crisp, dry Chardonnay others are sweeter, but Chaucers is a bit syrupy for my tastes. The rest of the folks that produce mead in this country do it in very small batches, as there is very low demand. There's a guy up in Oregon who makes a good mead, but I have forgotten his name. I'll look around for it.

Edit - softened my criticism a bit.

Now look what you did, I had to go find the bottle.
It's made by "Chaucer's".
You can drink it chilled, or warm with spices (Yummy).
(it comes will some mullings spice if you want to use it.)
It's good by itself or with dessert or with fruit or salad or maybe some chicken.
Have fun. :)

Try Whole Foods Market or import specialists. Mead comes from honey originally, so you are going to get varying tastes. Crisp mead sounds a lot like cider to me.

Hey now, be nice.
Chaucers is good.
It's not a Chardonnay, and I don't want it to taste like one.
I know the one your talking about from Oregon, but it's such a small brand it's next to impossible to find.
------Added------
The one from Oregon I know of makes flavored meads too. (berry flavors etc)

Yeah, I thought better of what I wrote, too. :)

We get Mead here (in Australia) in a reasonable number of bottle shops (but only one brand.)

I wouldn't describe it as tasting anything like white wine - closer to a cider.

Definitely best warm with cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon.

I think it's the best that way too. :)

But then again I've been drinking spiced (and un-spiced) ciders for the last 3 months strait.
Once you get hooked it's all over. :)
