D&D 4E Mearls on 4E being computer game: "It's more like online poker."

Wow, so does my phone company. D&D Insider is trying to be a phone company!

Lets see...
1. Both charge a subscription fee.
2. Both let you connect with old friends you haven't seen in a long time.
3. Both enable you to play games.
4. Both require you to have special equipment (phone/computer).
5. Nowadays, both incorporate the internet.
6. Both occasionally invalidate older purchases.

You're right!

Hey, that's not bad. I'll be able to play whenever I'm near a phone. You think there are complaints about cell phone use now. Wait until people are playing D&D while driving down the freeway!

Nice :D

I've seen some drivers who go APAATT.

Funny, my home campaign has all of those things.

I know. I was just mocking the mindless grognards :)
I raise you succeeding in your sense motive check against me laughing a lot. ;)

If I am going to play DnD it will be in a group, offline, around a table. I do not, will not game online.
And that's the thing...you don't have to.

But it opens up options for people that DO want to. The market is very obviously there, with things like OpenRPG and such, plus the hundreds of places with PbP forums, here included.

That's the important thing. Its not REPLACING anything at all...its adding another option.

Wait. You mean you don't bet to see who deals more damage?

Please, you guys are too easy on your players. I have them bet on how much damage they will take. This has sometimes lead to a few desperate actions to win a bet. (Hmm, I had not considered the possibility of a fighter grappling a giant porcupine.) ;)

I'll give it a go:

This just kills DnD. I don't want to be able to play whenever I want to play. I want to be forced to call up that guy that uses margarine in his hair and thinks he is my friend, and smells a bit funny, and ask him if he fancies popping around for a few hours to continue playing with one of his oh-so-generic half-elven rangers. Lord, if I am lucky he may even bring a few of "those" music CDs with him, you know, the ones with the screaming Norwegian death metal, even though this guy is about as hard as a limp biscuit, and hides behind his curtain hair when walking down the street.

Yeah, why the hell do I have to go online? That is like so sad. I hate online. I hate people. I hate flexibility. I hate having fun!

If you have a blog, I wish to subscribe to it.

So you have no friends scattered around the country, or who live at least far enough away that they can't make a session on a regular basis? Playing online with strangers isn't the draw for me; it's the possibility of gaming with guys I gamed with 25+ years ago who live 2500 miles away.
