Melf's Guide to Greyhawk

D&D General Melf's Guide to Greyhawk Coming From Luke Gygax & WotC

Could Wizards want to create a rules-lite game that is geared towards OSR play? They could but I doubt they would. It would have to be based upon overall reaction to this product if any rules towards grittiness prove incredibly popular. It’s basically asking Wizards to create a second D&D game - a new paradigm of basic and advanced.

There would have to be some really compelling sales to make them do that.
I have wondered if more/most of the dollars currently going toward other systems--DCC, Castles&Crusades, etc.--went back to D&D if it would make financial sense for them to have a well-supported rules variant that was more old school. Probably not. Sigh. A man can dream.

I don't think the people playing those other games would be interested, since it would mean vastly fewer adventures, settings, etc., being created, as well as a loss of the hacking culture in the broader games space. People who mostly play 5E may think there's a lot of homebrewing going on there, but it's a tiny fraction of what's happening outside that space.

"Quick, quick, come back to D&D for a product line that might, if you're lucky, get three or four releases over five years after you give up hundreds of things created for your existing game over that same time period" isn't an enticing deal for most folks.

You are probably right. But WotC has such a huge backlog of material. Update it for D&D Beyond and I’ll happily pay.

Yeah, I know. I don't think it's realistic to think that those variant rules will turn it into a rules-lite OSR game, though. For folks who want that from Luke Gygax, his back catalog of other works is probably the place to start.
It would be interesting if he was able to bring back Dangerous Journeys (though I must confess I have NO idea who holds the rights to that game at this time).

Several of the novel authors have had rocky relationships with first TSR and then later WotC. Weis & Hickman, Salvatore, probably others.

And?
That is totally true AND the rockiness of those relationships carried forward under different management. Do you see a pattern here? I do

Book by Ben Riggs? For one that is not from WotC, so they have nothing to apologize for, and for another, you are mischaracterizing

Have you bothered to read the thread? It's been covered.

But you do you man, keep on believing what you want to believe, evidence not withstanding.
I did read the thread and it spoke to the issues of me defending Gygax and getting pilloried for it on these boards. I am glad it was covered and my observation stands. You may be dismissive of it but I am happy for the vindictatiin. As a general rule people don’t apologize three times to others over nothing burgers.

Ayoub made a single sentence statement that doesn't mention the books upon which you feel vindicated for defending.

It certainly feels like they could identify which things in their back catalog they don't have any plans for (Jakandor, your time is now!) and then hire contractors to slowly do 5E updates to sell on D&D Beyond. That said, this would almost certainly be way down their list of priorities.
