Oh, if you're referring to the AD&D alignment axis... Elric was chaotic neutral tending towards good (in the first two books) in a society that was chaotic evil.
In AD&D terms, Elric suffered more than a few alignment shifts around chaotic neutral/neutral/chaotic evil.
I think at the end, he's firmly neutral, just in time for Stormbringer to kill him. The last line of the novels is so completely accurate: "Farewell, sweet Elric. I was a thousand times more evil than thou."
And I'd agree... Melniboneans did not seem to be particularily strong-willed or able to anticipate the results of their actions, so a bonus to Wisdom isn't so likely. They were noted for their charismatic attractiveness and general intelligence.
One idea is to allow them to take the Warlock's Infernal Pact multiclass feat, Initiate of the Faith, or Arcane Initiate as an extra or bonus feat at 1st level, and/or allow them to take the other power-swap feats earlier.
This would fit the background of the race, I think.
