Merlin

Felon

First Post
Wow, no thread about this yet?

Merlin debuted over the weekend on BBC. It was a mixture of Spider-Man, Beverly Hills 90210, and Out of This World...oh, and some crappy adolescent fantasy novel. You know the kind: a boy coming of age discovers he's got a special destiny that makes him more powerful than all the schmucks out there who've been working their asses for years to be good at their craft. For the sake of simplicity, let's say...Eragon?

OK, all facetiousness aside, I liked it. It was formulaic, but it was formulaic in a highly-polished, smoothly-paced, entertaining way. I plan to keep tuning in.

It was OK. Nothing special, but I think it can be fairly good. At the moment it a little scripted and cliche in a way. I'm waiting for something good to appear in the story.

I saw the trailers, but not the show. The trailers didn't engage me, particularly - looked like it was aimed at a younger audience than me.

Just based on the first episode, I think it has the potential to appeal to the same audience as Doctor Who. Don't let all the ridiculously handsome little twinks fool ya. :)

There was one fairly cold-blooded murder that I wouldn't have put in a kid's show.

I was a bit annoyed at there being black nobles at Uther's court. Destroyed the verisiwossname for me.

Other than that, off to a pretty good start.

Africans could be Roman Citizens so it is possible some could have migrated to other Roman Provinces. Just trying to cover for them.

I used to comment on the bizarre frequency with which interracial coupling was depicted on Doctor Who, thinking it was Russell Davies' trying to be politically correct or something, but over time I realized that racial diversity is just something the BBC seems intent on pushing at every turn.

Don't have a problem with it on Doctor Who, but it's a bit more jarring on a show that's supposed to take place 1500 years ago or so.

And even on Doctor Who, Martha Jones attracted quite a bit of attention in certain eras due to her skin color (like in Elizabethan England).
